Things to do in Long Beach: Adaptive Sports Fair, free pet adoptions, burlesque show and more!

From Shakespeare plays to stand-up comedy, book clubs to burlesque shows, garden tours to farm parties; this week has something for everyone in Long Beach and Signal Hill. 

Those who wish to bask in the spring beauty of nature this week can attend Farm Lot 59’s annual farm party Saturday night, Prisk Native Garden’s open house Sunday afternoon or a peaceful stroll through Bixby Knolls early Saturday morning. More outdoor activities include the city’s first-ever Adaptive Sports Fair Saturday morning and the Wrigley neighborhood’s first-ever farmer’s market Sunday morning and afternoon. 

Businesses and City departments are hosting a variety of workshops this week, such as an informative online street vending seminar Friday afternoon, a mocktail-making class Saturday evening, a forum on park equity in Long Beach Wednesday night and a financial literacy workshop Thursday night. 

For a more exciting outing filled with entertainment, residents can attend the Long Beach Shakespeare Company’s “Antigone” show, wind down at a live comedy show Monday night or enjoy a burlesque show Thursday night.

Friday 4/12

Low-Cost Vaccine Clinic: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Long Beach Animal Care Services (7700 E Spring St.) will be offering discounted vaccines and microchips for pets. Cats must be brought in carriers and dogs must be leashed. Services are available on a first-come, first-served basis for the first 60 pets. Treatment prices vary.

Sidewalk to Success: 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. The City of Long Beach will be hosting an online seminar to inform the public on the new street vending ordinance and provide guidance to existing and aspiring vendors. To register for this Zoom meeting, visit the City’s online event calendar. Free.

Live Theater: 8 p.m. The Long Beach Shakespeare Company will be performing “Antigone” at the Helen Borgers Theatre (4250 Atlantic Ave.). General admission tickets can be purchased for $25 on the theater’s website.

Saturday 4/13

“Amélie” Screening: Times vary. Beloved 2001 French film “Amélie” is screening at the Long Beach Art Theatre (2025 E Fourth St.) for two days only. The film follows a young woman who discreetly orchestrates the lives of those around her to create a beautiful world of her own making. Tickets are $12 general admission and can be purchased on the theater’s website

Bixby Knolls Strollers: 7:15 a.m. to 9 a.m. This neighborhood walking group meets weekly at Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (4105 Atlantic Ave.) for strolls through the Bixby Knolls area. A new route is introduced each week. Free.

District 7 Adoption Series: 10 a.m. to noon. The public is encouraged to adopt new family members at this pet fair at Silverado Park (1545 W 31st St.). All animals come from the City shelter and are in desperate need of homes. Adoption fees will be waived. Free.

Adaptive Sports Fair: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Local nonprofit Playmakers will host Long Beach’s first-ever adaptive sports fair, with a wide range of sports for people of all ages and abilities at Long Beach City College (3932 Faculty Ave.). There will be free ice cream, entertainment, baseball, basketball, dance, martial arts, yoga, boccia and much more. Free. 

Peak to Pasifika: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Resident artist Jason Pereira and Chumash weaver Tima Lotah Link will be teaching a workshop at the Pacific Island Ethnic Art Museum (695 Alamitos Ave.), where participants will learn how to create cords using the native plant dogbane. The workshop is included with the $5 cost of admission into the museum.

Business Anniversary: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Local business And Then LB (3803 Atlantic Ave.) is celebrating its seventh year in business. This celebration will feature tarot readings, face painting, flash tattoos, baked goods and a photo booth. Free to attend.

Writers Club Meeting: 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. National Poetry month will be recognized at this California Writers Club of Long Beach meeting at Los Altos United Methodist Church (5950 E Willow St.). Local poet Nancy Woo will be the guest of the meeting. Free. 

Farm Lot 59 Party: 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. This annual party at Farm Lot 59 will feature a picnic under the stars, live music from The Pollen Collective and a feast of roasted hog, chicken and vegetarian sides prepared by local chef Eugene. Tickets are $65 for adults, $20 for children and can be purchased on the farm’s website

Mocktail Class: 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Participants will learn how to craft mocktails themselves during this class at local business Shirley’s Temple (2420 E 28th St.). Students will compete with each other in a mocktail crafting competition. Tickets can be purchased for $40 on Eventbrite.

Sunday 4/14

Wrigley Farmer’s Market: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event marks the first-ever Wrigley neighborhood Association’s Farmer’s Market, with fresh produce and local art available for purchase at the corner of Willow Street and Pacific Avenue. The event has a greater chance of becoming a regular occurrence if the market receives a good turnout, according to the association. Free. 

Garden Open House: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Prisk Native Garden (2375 Fanwood Ave.) will be opening its doors to the public to view its native flowers and plants. The garden also features a new creek and pond. Free.

Monday 4/15

Theater Auditions: 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Long Beach Playhouse (5021 E Anaheim St.) is holding auditions for cast members to perform in the play “Loot.” The play will run from June 8 to July 6, on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m, and Sundays at 2 p.m. Those who audition must bring their head shots and a resume. Cold readings will be provided during the auditions. This is a volunteer acting position, and chosen actors will not receive compensation. 

Cosmic Comedy: 7 p.m. Attendees can enjoy a live comedy show along with their food and drinks at Jade on the Water (6380 East Pacific Coast Highway). There will be discounts for service industry workers. Free to enter; menu prices vary. Reservations can be made on Eventbrite.

Tuesday 4/16

Senior Social Club: 11 a.m. to noon. Seniors can socialize and get active at this class that will introduce basic zumba steps and dance moves set to music in the Signal Hill Library Community Room (1800 E Hill St.). Free. 

Lincoln Park Walking Group: 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Residents can join a walk starting at Lincoln Park (101 Pacific Ave.), circling the Civic Center and the Billie Jean King Main Library. Participants can walk at their own pace. The walk will take place on flat ground. Free.

A Better Trip: 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Comedian Shane Mauss will be performing live at the Art Theatre of Long Beach (2025 E Fourth St.). His stand up will be accompanied by visuals and animations on the screen behind him. Tickets can be purchased for $27.50 on Eventbrite.

Wednesday 4/17

Grand Opening: 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Local nonprofit Algalita invites the public to the grand opening of its new laboratory that will focus on microplastic research (148 N Marina Drive), featuring vendors, a lab tour, a short film screening and more. To register, visit Eventbrite. Free.

Exploring Park Equity in Greater Long Beach: 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. During this open forum at Studio One Eleven (245 E Third St.), youth, academics and design professionals will discuss ways to create more park space in underserved areas of Long Beach. Register for free on Eventbrite.

Courtesy Beachwood Blendery Beachwood Blendery is the first craft brewery in Long Beach that can do on-site manufacturing.

Thursday 4/18

Grocery Giveaway: 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Local nonprofit Love Beyond Limits will be giving away groceries at Martin Luther King Jr. Park on the third Thursday of each month (1133 E Rhea St.). Free. 

Online Movie and Q&A: 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Impact Media Partners will host this film and Q&A in honor of the upcoming Earth Day. Attendees can watch “Single Use Planet,” a film about the impacts of single-use plastic and hear from a panel of four experts from around the country. Free, but RSVP on Eventbrite is required

Tropical Tease: 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Marvelous Mavens will be hosting a burlesque performance to an exotica soundtrack at the Secret Island Tiki Restaurant and Lounge (209 Pine Ave.). General admission tickets can be purchased for $10 on Eventbrite.

Financial Literacy for Adults: 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. During this workshop at Harte Neighborhood Library (1595 W. Willow St.), licensed financial educator Nema Escartin from World System Builder will be teaching participants ways to increase their cash flow and how to build a plan to pay off debt. Romance Comedy Book Club: 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Residents can meet and discuss a different romantic comedy novel at this recurring book club on the third Thursday of each month in the Signal Hill Library Community Room (1800 E Hill St.). The book this month is “It Happened One Summer” by Tessa Bailey. Free. 

Music Album Party: 6:30 p.m. The Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association hosts this recurring listening party to various albums and genres. Music fans can meet up at Beachwood Brewing (3630 Atlantic Ave.) and listen to “Toys in the Attic” by Aerosmith as a host reads facts, stories and backgrounds of the album in between songs.
