Things to do in Long Beach: Art and zine workshops, plant and compost parties, a double feature movie screening and more!

This week has multiple opportunities for residents to hone in on their hobbies or let loose with things to do in Long Beach and Signal Hill.

If the winter breezes and clear skies are begging you to connect with nature, Willow Springs Park will be hosting free tours to observe native winter flora Saturday morning. For more unique local blooms, the South Coast Orchid Society is hosting its monthly meeting at the Whaley Park Community Center Thursday evening while focusing on blue orchids. 

Friends and families can find connection over art and sound therapy with a meditation and painting session at The Art Spot Friday evening, or at a zine-making workshop at the Museum of Latin American Art Sunday night. If you need a hand diving into new hobbies this year, Tuttle Cameras is hosting a “buttons and dials” camera class Thursday night, and Kubo LB is hosting a journals and crafts swap Sunday afternoon.

Friday 1/19

Food Distribution: Noon to 2 p.m. Local nonprofit Adventures to Dreams (903 De Forest Ave.) will be distributing groceries to individuals and families in need. Free.

Come and Dance – Moving and Grooving: 5 p.m to 6 p.m. People of all ages are invited to learn different kinds of freestyle dance to various genres of music at Lincoln Park (101 Pacific Ave.). Free.

Creative Healing Art + Sound Therapy: 6 p.m. Therapist Cynthia Perez will be leading a sound bowl meditation and a free-flow painting session at The Art Spot (4356 Atlantic Ave.) This event aims to help participants let go of doubt and connect to their creativity. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased on The Art Spot’s website.

Saturday 1/20

Job Fair: 9 am. to 3 p.m. The Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is looking to fill numerous positions in its Community Recreation Services Bureau, and invites job seekers to this job fair at the Doris Topsy Elvord Community Center at Houghton Park (6301 Myrtle Ave.) to learn more. New Year, New Growth: 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. California Climate Action Corps fellows will be leading a tour through Willow Springs Park (2745 Orange Ave.) to observe native winter flora. Attendees are asked to bring a reusable water bottle, sun protection, layers of clothing and close-toed shoes. Free.

Learn to Compost Workshop: 10 a.m. to noon. During this workshop, participants will learn how to turn food scraps into nutrient-rich compost for plants. The workshop will teach how to create and maintain a backyard compost bin as well as what materials can and cannot be composted. Lunch and Learn for Educators: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Local educators are invited to Algalita Marine Research and Education (148 N Marina Dr.) to collect samples or synthetic sand and put together teaching tool kits to bring back to their classes. To register, visit Eventbrite. Free.

Grocery Grab-n-Go: Perry Lindsey Academy invites residents to their Joyous January Grocery Grab-n-Go at 5075 Daisy Ave. Residents can receive fresh, packaged groceries, gifts, entertainment and more. Free.

Frenchie Meetup: 10 a.m. So Cal’s French Beachdogs invites local French Bulldogs and their humans to gather at Rosie’s Dog Beach (5000 E Ocean Blvd.). Free.

Reading Circle for Palestine: 11 a.m. Birthworkers of Color Collective invites children and their parents to 1635 E Anaheim St. to learn about and show support for Palestine with a reading circle featuring children’s books about Palestine and a kite-making workshop. Clothing Swap: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. People of the Earth Krew invites the public to bring gently used clothing to Bluff Park (2500 E Ocean Blvd.) to donate. Journaling/Craft Swap Meet: 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. People are invited to bring unused journals and art supplies to trade at Bel Canto Books inside Kubo LB (3976 Atlantic Ave.). Free.

Artful Evenings: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Artist Dustin Garcia will teach a workshop on zine-making at the Long Beach Museum of Art (2300 East Ocean Blvd.). Tickets can be purchased for $20 on Eventbrite.

Monday 1/22

Mobile Recess Program: 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Kids between the ages of 5 and 14 are invited to participate in sports and arts and crafts activities in a safe environment during this City-run after-school program at Rose Park (800 Orizaba Ave.). Free.

Community Budget Meeting: 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The City of Long Beach invites residents to the Doris Topsy-Elvord Community Center at Houghton Park (6301 Myrtle Ave.) to give their input on the City’s upcoming fiscal year budget. Free.

Orchid Society Meetup: 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. The South Coast Orchid Society will be discussing the lore and beauty of blue orchids, a subject of adoration in many movies, books and perfumes. Orchid Society members will bring their flowers for display. This meeting will be held at the Whaley Park Community Center (5620 E Atherton St.). Free.

Tuesday 1/23

Social Security Workshop: 11 a.m. to noon. During this workshop at the Billie Jean King Main Library (200 West Broadway), seniors can learn about social security, including benefits, taxes and more. Free.

Walking Group: 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Residents can join a walk starting at Lincoln Park (101 Pacific Ave.), circling the Civic Center and the Billie Jean King Main Library. Participants can walk at their own pace. The walk will take place on flat ground. Free.

Wednesday 1/24

Volunteer Recruitment Event: 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Those interested in volunteering at the Museum of Latin American Art (628 Alamitos Ave.) are invited to learn more about the different positions open during this event. RSVP on the museum’s website. Free.

Parkour Fitness: 7 p.m. During this weekly meet up at Discovery Well Park (2200 Temple Ave.) participants will practice parkour and martial arts. Attendees are asked to arrive five minutes early, because the class starts immediately at 7 p.m. and the group may move locations as they practice parkour. Thursday 1/25

Lactation Clinic: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. During this drop-in clinic at Birthworkers of Color Collective (1635 E Anaheim St., Suite A), parents can receive guidance and support to breastfeed their babies. Free.

100 Years of LB Airport History: 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The Historical Society of Long Beach will be giving a presentation on the history of the Long Beach Airport at the Billie Jean King Main Library (200 W. Broadway). This presentation is part of the airport’s centennial anniversary celebration. Free.

Camera Class: 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. This group class is for people who want to learn all the basics of how to use a camera. Residents can receive a deep dive of every button, dial and setting on their camera with Tuttle Cameras (5467 E Carson St.). Tickets are $50 and can be purchased on their website

Monster Double Feature: 10 p.m. Movie lovers can enjoy a monster-packed late night movie screening of two ‘50s classics on 16 mm film at the Long Beach Art Theatre (2025 E Fourth St.). Tickets are $13.50 and can be purchased online
