Things to do in Long Beach: Barbie-themed burlesque, Colombian Independence party, European car show and more!

Fill in those hot summer days and sticky nights with the many unique, lively and mostly free things to do in Long Beach and Signal Hill this upcoming week. 

Families have no shortage of ways to spend the summer with different movies in the moonlight Friday and Monday night, a community bike ride around Bixby Knolls Sunday morning and concerts from the Long Beach Municipal Band in various parks Tuesday through Thursday. 

People looking to tap into their artsy side can attend an exhibit showcase at the Long Beach Beer Lab Friday night, an open house at the Icehouse Arts Complex Sunday night or participate in a virtual street photography class Thursday night.

Friday 7/14

Art Show: 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. The Los Ruano Gallery organized an exhibit showcasing the work of over 15 artists at the Long Beach Beer Lab (518 W Willow St.). Free to attend.

Family Night Out: 6 p.m. Long Beach Moms organized this night out for families at Trademark Brewing (233 E Anaheim St.). Food and beer will be available for purchase. To reserve a spot, attendees are asked to Venmo $20 to @angelica-wheaton8119. In the event someone can’t make it, their $20 will be used for community events and administrative costs. Those who attend will receive their money back when they arrive.

PCH Movies & Moonlight: Begins at sunset. Residents can gather along Seaport Way to watch the Disney movie “Raya and the Last Dragon.” Before the movie begins, airbrush tattoos and other pre-show entertainment will be available. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Free. 

Barbie Burlesque: 8:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Those 21 and older are invited to watch a Barbie-themed burlesque show at Harvelle’s (201 E Broadway). There is a two drink minimum. There will be two shows, one at 8:30 p.m. and another at 10:30 p.m. General admission tickets can be purchased for $18 on Eventbrite.

Saturday 7/15

Coffee, Conversations & Clean-up: 10:30 a.m. to noon. This biweekly series will give residents the chance to speak with Friends of the Long Beach Public Library President Barbarsa Sosa over free coffee and pastries at the Billie Jean King Main Library terrace (200 W Broadway). Residents can also participate in a quick cleanup of Lincoln Park (101 Pacific Ave.). Free.

Hard Park: Noon to 7 p.m. Six musicians will be performing at Shoreline Aquatic Park (200 Aquarium Way). Free.

YA Book Launch Party: 1 p.m. Author George Wolfe will be introducing his new young adult book “Into the River of Angels” to the public at Gatsby Books (5535 E Spring St.). Free.

Documentary Film Premiere: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The short film documentary “Liwanag,” which means light in Tagalog, will premiere at the Bret Harte Library (1595 West Willow St.). The film follows the lives of three Filipino migrant workers during the COVID-19 pandemic and their journey of finding light in the darkest of times. Free.

Sunday 7/16

Euros by the Beach: 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. A variety of European cars will be on display at the beach (1 Junipero Ave.). This event is organized by Beach City Euros Club and Liqui Moly. Free to attend.

Kidical Mass Bike Ride: 11 a.m. Families and children are invited to a community kid-centered bike through the Bixby Knolls neighborhood. The bike ride will begin at Pixie Toys (3914 Atlantic Ave.) and treats will be provided during the ride. Helmets are recommended. Free. 

Makers Market: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Over 35 local artisans and artists will be selling their wares along Seaport Way accompanied by live music and photo opportunities. Free to attend. 

Live Music: 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Local musicians Jade & Libba will be performing at Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles (730 East Broadway). Admission will cost $35 at the door.

Open Studio: 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Every third Sunday of each month, the public is invited to visit the Icehouse Arts Complex (625 W Anaheim St.) and view the work of resident artists. Free.

Monday 7/17

Hygiene & Household Items Giveaway: 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The Heart of Ida nonprofit will be giving away gift bags filled with household and hygiene items for seniors at the Long Beach Senior Center (1150 E Fourth St.). Items will include paper towels, toilet paper, cleaning products, laundry detergent, toothpaste, soap, shampoo and more on a first-come, first-served basis. Free. 

Movie in the Park: 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. The public is invited to an outdoor screening of the movie “Turning Red” at Pan American Park (5157 Centralia Ave.). Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, blanket and picnic food. The movie will begin at dusk. Free.

Tuesday 7/18

Bread Pop-Up: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Small business Bread Love will be hosting a weekly pop-up sale at Miller Children & Women’s Hospital (2801 Atlantic Ave.). Bread prices vary.

Long Beach Municipal Band Concert: 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Long Beach Municipal Band will be continuing its 114th season at Bixby Annex Park (130 Cherry Ave.) with a theme of “It’s Showtime,” where they will play classic Broadway musical numbers. Residents are invited to bring chairs, blankets and picnic food. Free.

Wednesday 7/19

Baby & Toddler Storytime: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Babies and their caregivers are invited to Signal Hill Public Library (1800 E. Hill St.) to enjoy stories and playtime. Free.

Picnic in the Park: 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Residents are invited to a community picnic at Promenade Park (215 E First St.) on the third Wednesday of every month in the summer. The downtown park will host a live DJ and downtown Long Beach representatives will be present. Free. 

Restaurant Opening: 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Residents are invited to the grand opening of A PCH, a new eatery opening at 6460 E. Pacific Coast Highway, Unit D200. Menu prices vary.

Thursday 7/20

Long Beach Municipal Band Concert: 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Long Beach Municipal Band will be continuing its 114th season at Recreation Park (4900 E. Seventh St.) with a theme of “It’s Showtime,” where they will play classic Broadway musical numbers. Residents are invited to bring chairs, blankets and picnic food. Free. 

Photography Class: 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuttle Cameras will be hosting a street photography class on Zoom. The class will go over how to capture different cities and environments, various cameras and lenses, camera settings and street etiquette. Registration is required in advance to receive the Zoom link. Free. 

Colombian Independence Day: 8 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. Those 21 and older are invited to celebrate Colombian Independence Day at The Bamboo Club (3522 E Anaheim St.) with songs by Colombian cumbia band Very Be Careful, with DJ Dennis Owens. Tickets can be purchased for $12 on Ticket Tailor.
