June’s weather is all over the place so far, but don’t let that stop you from connecting with neighbors, organizing with local causes and exploring new hobbies in Long Beach and Signal Hill this week.
There’s plenty of opportunities to get involved in local issues, with ÓRALE’s week of action that kicks off with a film screening and poster-making on Saturday in preparation for their Justice Fund Rally in front of City Hall on Tuesday, Norfside LB Outreach’s homeless supply distribution Sunday morning, Car-Lite Long Beach’s meeting Sunday afternoon or Care, Culture, Collab’s weekly book club Monday evening.
Residents can also learn violence prevention techniques with the Community Resource Center or learn about a proposed development near Los Cerritos Wetlands both on Wednesday night.
Summer is the perfect time to explore local nature, with Los Cerritos Wetlands’ raptor rumble walk Saturday morning, Willow Springs Park’s historical tour Sunday morning, Ranchos Los Cerritos’ bird-watching walk Thursday morning or a gentle yoga class at Reservoir Park Thursday morning.

Friday 6/6
CPR Lessons: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Residents can learn how to conduct hands-only CPR from MemorialCare workers at LBX – The Hangar (4150 McGowen St.). Free.
First Fridays: 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The Atlantic Avenue corridor in Bixby Knolls will be activated with live music, art expos, food specials and more. Roots through Recovery will be distributing and teaching people how to use narcan and fentanyl testing strips. Free.

Saturday 6/7
Raptor Rumble: 8 a.m. Learn about restoration efforts at Los Cerritos Wetlands and discover the natural habitats and thriving species in the area during this guided nature walk. Attendees should be in the driveway/parking area at the corner of First Street and Pacific Coast Highway. Closed-toed shoes are required, and those under 16 require an adult. Free, but a $5 donation can be made on Eventbrite.
Etch and Catch: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Residents can get their license plate or VIN etched into their catalytic converter at this event hosted by the Long Beach Police Department at 2525 Grand Ave. This is to assist police investigations regarding catalytic converter theft. Learn more about requirements to participate and register to attend online. Free.
Wrigley Youth Center Open House: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Celebrate the opening of the new YMCA Wrigley Youth Center (2299 Pacific Ave.) with exciting giveaways, arts and crafts, face painting, snow cones, sports clinics, inflatable games, snacks and more. Free, but online RSVP is required on Eventbrite.
RLC Teen Volunteer Open House: 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. From educational programs and public hours to gardening, teens 14 and older have plenty of opportunities to volunteer at Ranchos Los Cerritos (4600 N. Virginia Road) and can learn more at this open house. RSVP online. Free.
Community Walk: 10:30 a.m. BLKEventsLA is taking their walks citywide across multiple regions, with the Long Beach walk being led by CRayProject, Black Lives Matter Long Beach and LiBRE. The walk will begin at 2101 E Broadway. Free.
Film Screening and Poster Making: 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Residents can join ÓRALE’S week of action to advocate for the Long Beach Justice Fund, which aids immigrants facing deportation. Two films will be shown: “Journey to the Long Beach Justice Fund” and “A Step Forward” as attendees make posters in preparation for a rally on Tuesday. Day of Play’s Summer Kickoff: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Exceptional Day of Play will host a summer kickoff event for people of all abilities at Wardlow Park (3457 Stanbridge Ave.) featuring water-based play, arts and crafts, sensory bins and accessible games. Free.
Sister Cities Celebration: Noon to 4 p.m. Long Beach’s sister cities will be honored and celebrated at this cultural event at 2ND & PCH (6400 Pacific Coast Highway), featuring dancing, music, kickboxers, crafts, food, giveaways and more.
Gender Affirming Closet: Noon to 4 p.m. Residents can donate gently-used clothing or find clothes that affirms their identity at this closet at the LGBTQ Center (2017 E. Fourth St.). Free.
Farm Lot’s 15th Bday: 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Local urban farm and nonprofit Farm Lot 59 is celebrating its 15th birthday with a community celebration at the farm (2714 California Ave.). Panxa Cocina and Baryo & Friends will be serving food while The Pollen Collective plays live music. Tickets are $65 for adults, $20 for children and can be purchased online. All ticket proceeds go to the farm.

Sunday 6/8
Supply Distro: 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Join mutual aid group Norfside LB Outreach while they distribute food, clothing and other supplies to unhoused neighbors in North Long Beach. Location details will be shared upon signing up or messaging @norfsidelb_outreach on Instagram. Free.
History in the Park: 10 a.m. Discover the deep history of Willow Springs Park (2745 Orange Ave.) with historian Larry Rich as he covers the park’s geology, natural systems, human habitation, economic development and restoration efforts during a walking tour. A hat, water and sturdy walking shoes are recommended. Free.
Car-Lite Long Beach Meeting: Noon to 2 p.m. Learn about local bike and pedestrian advocacy group Car-Lite Long Beach at their in-person meeting at Gaucho Beach (780 E. Shoreline Drive, Suite B). Free.
Family Concert: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Long Beach Symphony and RuMBA Foundation is hosting this family concert at the Long Beach Terrace Theater (300 E. Ocean Blvd.), featuring music, dancing, an instrument petting zoo, arts and crafts and activities for kids. Adult tickets are $20, and anyone 17 and younger is free.
Printmaking Party: 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Local creatives can learn from one another at PLACE’s Second Sundays fundraising edition. Get hands-on experiences in a variety of art forms and help PLACE (2172 Pacific Ave.) to keep their printmaking hours open and affordable. All materials will be provided. Book Club: 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Care, Culture, Collab’s weekly book club meets at Vine (2142 E. Fourth St.) to discuss books centering anarchism and abolitionism, while also discussing local politics, community and more. The current book is “Parable of the Talents” by Octavia E. Butler. Reading is not required to attend and join the discussion. Free.
Print-Making Mondays: 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Local artists can learn how to print zines, fliers and more or work on any creative project of their choosing each Monday at PLACE (2172 Pacific Ave.). Prints are either free or on a pay-what-you-can basis.

Justice Fund Rally: 5 p.m. Join ÓRALE as they advocate for the city of Long Beach to further invest in the Long Beach Justice Fund, which aids immigrants facing deportation, at this rally in front of City Hall (411 W. Ocean Blvd.). Free.

Violence Prevention Discussion: 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This violence prevention series by the Community Resource Center (5599 Atlantic Ave.) covers different issues contributing to violence and how to stop it. This week’s discussion will cover how to calm tense situations, restore relationships and disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline with restorative justice coaches from LBUSD. Youth will receive backpacks and a $20 gift card. Free.
Virtual Development Meeting: 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. A development is being planned on the land near Los Cerritos Wetlands, and the public has one more chance to learn about and comment on the project before it moves forward, during this virtual meeting via Zoom. Free.

Thursday 6/12
Bird Walk: 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Birders and those curious about bird-watching can explore the species in Ranchos Los Cerritos’ garden (4600 N. Virginia Road) on the second Thursday of each month. During this guided walk, staff will be present to answer bird and nature-related questions. Participants are encouraged to bring their own binoculars and meet in the parking lot at 8 a.m. This event will be cancelled if it rains. Free.
Yoga in the Park: 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. All ages and skill levels are invited to this slow-moving, gentle yoga practice at Reservoir Park (3315 Gundry Ave.). Attendees should bring their own yoga mat. Free.
Hearing Loss Association Meeting: 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Lakewood chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of American will meet at Weingart Center (5220 Oliva Ave.) to discuss modern technology designs to assist with audio issues. These meetings are captioned and provide a safe space to ask questions and find solutions. Free.
Homelessness Education Event: 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The City of Long Beach is hosting this HOME (Housing and Homelessness Opportunities, Mobilization and Engagement) Community Roadshow at Houghton Park’s Community Center (6301 Myrtle Ave.). Attendees can learn about local resources, service providers and what the City is doing to combat homelessness. Free.
Downtown Bike Fest: 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Downtown Long Beach’s Taste of Downtown event will be bike-centered, with giveaways, gear swaps, bike repairs, pop-up shops, a photobooth, group rides and more at The Promenade North (Intersection of Promenade and Pine). Free.
