The sweltering heat of September humbled even the most cold-blooded of residents this week, as student walk-outs protested the lack of air conditioning at CSULB and Long Beach reopened a handful of cooling centers for its residents.
Despite the record-breaking temperatures, neighborhoods throughout Long Beach and Signal Hill still plan events filled with live music, furry friends and even the chance to become a history buff. For the lucky few whose air conditioners are still going strong, stay inside and attend one of the library’s many virtual events teaching composting or various crafts.
Friday 9/9
Asian Film Series: 3 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. The public is invited to the Billie Jean King Main Library (200 W. Broadway) to view the 1993 Vietnamese drama film “The Scent of Green Papaya,” about a child servant working in the home of a rich but troubled family. The film will be in Vietnamese with English subtitles. Free.
Buddy Holly Birthday Bash: 7 p.m. Those 21 and over are invited to listen to over nine local musicians perform in honor of Buddy Holly’s birthday at Boomer’s (5456 Del Amo Blvd.) There is a cover charge of $20.

Omar Awaida Tribute Mural: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public is invited to help paint a mural at Los Cerritos Park (3750 Del Mar Ave.) honoring the life of the young son of a local family who was killed by a drunk driver. The mural is designed by local artist LaJon Miller. Free.
Dalmatian Meet Up: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dalmations and their humans are invited to enjoy a beach day and socialize together at Rosie’s Dog Beach (500 E Ocean Blvd.) Free.
Second Caturdays: Noon to 4 p.m. This event organized by Parkview Village Shops (5423 E Village Rd.) will feature adoptable cats and kittens, over 50 local vendors, free family activities, music and more. Free.
Vegan Fest: Noon to 6 p.m. A variety of vegan food vendors will be selling their dishes while customers listen to live music at The Scottish Rite Event Center (855 Elm Ave.) Free.
Ranchos Walk: 7:30 a.m. Residents will get the opportunity to exercise while enjoying local history during the 9.4-mile annual Ranchos Walk organized by Walk Long Beach, Rancho Los Cerritos, Rancho Los Alamitos and the Historical Society of Long Beach. Participants are encouraged to use the IZI Travel app as they follow the winding 9.4-mile path through Long Beach and Signal Hill. The app will help to guide participants on the correct route and play audio recordings that teach users about local history as they walk through the cities. Registration will take place at Rancho Los Alamitos (6400 E Bixby Hill Rd.) and then take participants to the CSULB campus, through Reservoir Hill, Hilltop Park in Signal Hill, Willow Springs Park and then finish at Rancho Los Cerritos. Japanese Classic Car Show: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The public is invited to view multiple classic Japanese cars on display at Marina Green Park (386 East Shoreline Drive). Outside food is not allowed at the event. Attendees can bring beverages in clear water bottles, large thermos flasks will be subject to inspection. Tickets can be purchased for $20 on Eventbrite.
Household Hazardous Waste and E-waste Disposal: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public is invited to dispose of their electronic waste and household hazardous waste materials at the EDCO Recycling Center (2755 California Ave.) Those dropping off waste should place the items in an unlocked car and keep their windows up for socially distanced disposal. Sew It Goes: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Attendees are invited to bring whatever sewing project they are working on to get help, support and inspiration at Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library (5870 Atlantic Ave.) Children 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Free.
Sunday, Sept. 11
Belmont Shore Car Show: 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The public is invited to this annual car show organized by the Belmont Shore Business Association. This event will feature over 400 cars on display, vendors and more on 2nd Street between Livingston Drive & Bayshore Avenue. At 9:11 a.m. cars will honk their horns in honor of the lives lost on 9/11. Free.
Unity Event: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The public is invited to this community celebration organized by Tianguis Market Foundation to enjoy live music, vendors, kids’ rides, food booths and more at 1305 E Pacific Coast Highway. Free.
Food Market: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Buddhavipassana Temple (2015 W Hill St.) of Long Beach is holding a weekly food market where the public can buy a variety of Thai/Lao street foods, desserts and beverages while enjoying traditional music performances. Entry is Free.
Fundraiser Concert: 7 p.m to 8:30 p.m. The First Congregational Church of Long Beach (241 Cedar Ave.) will be holding a concert to raise funds to restore its historic building. French flute player Jean Ferrandis and local organist Marc Dickey will perform music by Bach, Debussy, Hindemith, Schumann and Verdi. Tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite for $50.
Wednesday, Sept. 14
Kabbalah Class: Noon. The public is invited to this weekly class on Kabbalah Jewish Mysticism taught by Rabbi Perelmuter at the Alpert Jewish Community Center (3801 E Willow St.). A new topic will be discussed each week. Free.
Learn To Compost: Noon to 1 p.m. During this virtual workshop participants will learn how to turn food scraps into nutrient rich compost for plants. The workshop will teach how to create and maintain a backyard compost bin as well as what materials can and cannot be composted. Stay Sudsy: 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Teens between the ages of 13 to 18 are invited to learn the basics of soap making in a hands-on activity at the Mark Twain Neighborhood Library (1401 E. Anaheim St.) Free.
Thursday, Sept. 15
Farm Stand: 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Growing Experience, Long Beach’s largest urban farm, is hosting a weekly farm stand each Thursday at 750 E Via Carmelitos in North Long Beach. The stand offers fresh, seasonal produce directly from the farm. Donations are welcome. Residents can also drop off compostable items to enrich the farm’s soil. Entry is free.
Reading Buddies: 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Parents and caregivers can bring children to the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library (5870 Atlantic Ave.) where a teen volunteer will give them up to 30 minutes of one-on-one reading practice. Free.
Night Market: 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The public is invited to enjoy this combination of a street fair and farmers market in downtown Long Beach (300 N Promenade.) The event will include vendors, live music and more. Free.
