Whether you’ve been naughty or nice this year, there’s lots of fun, festive and mostly free things to do in Long Beach and Signal Hill.
For those looking for a spooky twist on the holiday season, the Long Beach Art Theatre will be showing the 1974 horror classic “Black Christmas” Friday night, and the Bamboo Club will host a screening of the 2015 horror “Krampus” based on the legend Sunday night.
Residents can get their classic Christmas fixings with a neighborhood Christmas tree decorating party Saturday morning, the Belmont Shore Christmas parade Saturday night, or the 53rd annual CSULB Holiday Art Sale Sunday.
If the cool weather is inviting you outdoors, Los Cerritos Wetlands is hosting their monthly nature hike Saturday morning, while Tuttle Cameras is hosting a photo walk at the El Dorado Nature Center Saturday.
Friday 12/1
World AIDS Day: 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The City of Long Beach will be commemorating World AIDS Day with a panel of speakers at the Houghton Park Doris Topsy-Elvord Community Center (6301 Myrtle Ave.). The event will conclude with a candlelight vigil. Free.
Fat Friday: 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Those 21 and older are invited to Harvelle’s Long Beach (201 E Broadway) to enjoy performances by artists Jairus Mozee, Anthony Cruz and Charlie Bereal. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Tickets can be purchased for $20 at longbeach.harvelles.com.
Black Christmas: 10 p.m. The Long Beach Art Theatre (2025 E Fourth St.) will have a one-night screening of the 1974 horror “Black Christmas.” General admission is $13.50.
Fever Fridays: 10 p.m. Those 18 and older are invited to dance the night away at Hamburger Mary’s (330 Pine Ave.). DJ Paulo Ramirez will be playing music. Gogo dancers will be performing. Free admission.
Saturday 12/2
Raptor Rumble: 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Los Cerritos Wetlands invites residents ages 7 and older to this nature hike to explore the often unseen areas of the wetlands. The hike will be led by Tidal Influence and will guide residents through the salt flats and up to the Heroine Points Cultural Trail, hoping to spot tiger beetles and coyote tracks. Residents can meet at the parking lot at the corner of First Street and PCH between 7:45 a.m. and 8:10 a.m. No latecomers will be allowed entry. Free.
Winter Wonderland: 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. This seasonal celebration organized by the AOC7 Neighborhood Association will bring neighbors together to decorate a community Christmas tree at 851 Orange Ave. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own ornaments to add to the tree. Hot cocoa and cookies will be provided. Free.
Photo Walk: 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Residents can take a walk through the El Dorado Nature Center (7550 East Spring St.) to take a photo walk with Canon Product Educator Cassandra Caldwell. Signups are $5 and parking is $8.
Roller Disco: 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Downtown Long Beach’s roller disco at The Promenade N between Third Street and Fourth Street will host a holiday edition of the retro dance party with tunes by MALCOLM. Residents can rent skates if they do not own a pair. Free to attend.
Chat With An Author: 4:30 p.m. Residents can hear from Oum Ry and daughter Sochada, authors of “I am Oum Ry: A Champion Kickboxer’s Story of Surviving the Cambodian Genocide and Finding Peace.” This chat will be held at the Mark Twain Library (1401 E Anaheim St.) and is free.
Belmont Shore Christmas Parade: 6 p.m. This annual holiday parade takes place along Second Street from Livingston Avenue to Bayshore Avenue. The parade will feature floats, elves, Santa Claus, over a dozen marching bands and more. Free.
Paint & Pot: 6 p.m.to 9 p.m. Local plant store Got A Leaf (5265 Atlantic Ave.) invites residents to paint a pot with a custom design. Prices TBA.
Sunday 12/3
Carole King Cover: 2 p.m. Suzanne O Davis and the Tapestry band will be covering songs from Carole King’s 1971 Platinum album “Tapestry” at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center (6200 E Atherton St.). Tickets can be purchased for $45 on Tix.com.
Jazz Concert: 3 p.m. Jazz legends, vocalist Dewey Erney and pianist Tom Rainier, will perform a rare show at the Grace First Presbyterian Church (3955 N Studebaker Road). This concert is free, but donations are encouraged.
Holiday Art Sale: 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Cal State Long Beach School of Art will host its 53rd annual Holiday Art Sale, displaying works from students ranging from ceramics, drawing, painting, fiber, graphic design, illustration, metals and jewelry as well as printmaking. All works will be on sale and on display in the Faculty Arts buildings 2 and 3 (1250 Bellflower Blvd.). The show will remain on display through Dec. 7 from noon to 5 p.m. Free to attend.
Community Concert: 5 p.m. Bethany School invites residents to this Christmas concert at 2250 Clark Ave. with performances by the Long Beach Community Band. Free.
Seasonal Slasher Screening: 7 p.m. There will be a screening of the scary holiday movie “Krampus” at the Bamboo Club (3522 E Anaheim St.). Reservations are not required, but are strongly recommended. To register, visit bambooclublb.com/. Free to enter.
Monday 12/4
Read to Dogs: 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Young children can practice reading to certified therapy dogs at the Signal Hill Public Library (1800 E Hill St.). Reading to dogs is meant to build a child’s self confidence as they learn to read. Free.
Mai-Tai Monday: 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. DJs Lili Bird and Lono Calls will be playing a mix of Exotica, Latin, Surf, Lounge, Jet Set, World Music and more at The Bamboo Club (3522 E Anaheim St.). This event is for those 21 and older. Free to attend.
Tuesday 12/5
Kids Club Time with Mrs. Claus: 10 a.m. to noon. Kids can meet Mrs. Claus at 2nd & PCH (6400 Pacific Coast Hwy.). Free.
Evening for Educators: 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. This event at the Museum of Latin American Art (628 Alamitos Ave.) is geared towards educators, and will explore the work of artist Alexandre Arrechea. Light refreshments will be provided. Free.
Wednesday 12/6
Blippi Live: 6 p.m. Kids are invited to sing, dance and learn alongside Blippi at this live event at the Terrace Theater (300 E Ocean Blvd.). Babies under the age of 2 can sit on a parent’s lap, children over the age of 2 require a full price ticket. General admission tickets can be purchased for $27.50 on Ticketmaster.
College Basketball Game: 7 p.m. The LBSU men’s basketball team will be facing off against Life Pacific University at the Walter Pyramid (1250 N Bellflower Blvd.). Tickets can be purchased on ticket-center.com for $39 to $49.
Thursday 12/7
Hands-On Cooking for Kids: 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Chef Tech Cooking School (3842 Atlantic Ave.) will be holding a series of workshops to teach kids between 6 and 14 years old the basics of cooking. During this workshop, students will learn how to make provoleta cheese fondue and alfajores with dulce de leche. Tickets cost $180 and can be purchased on the school’s website.
Book Signing and Conversation: 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Los Cerritos Wetlands Trust is inviting residents to meet and learn from Rosanna Xia, author of “California Against the Sea: Visions for our Vanishing Coastline.” Xia is an environmental journalist who will have a moderated conversation with CSULB geography lecturer Dr. David A. Pepper at the Aquarium of the Pacific (100 Aquarium Way). Free, but reservations are required on Eventbrite.
