Things to do in Long Beach: Halloween haunts, sewing workshop, PawFest and more!

A baby shark, doo-doo, doo-doo, doo-doo’s onto the nose of Bo, a 2-year-old therapy dog that helps out at Miller Children’s and Women’s Hospital during the trick-or-treating event for hospital patients on Halloween 2023.

Long Beach is buzzing with activities this week, offering something for every age and interest. Families with kids can enjoy storytimes in English and Filipino throughout the week, a hands-on sewing workshop to make luchador plushies Saturday afternoon, and a screening of Disney’s “Coco” Tuesday evening. 

Meanwhile, the 21 and over crowd can enjoy spooky cocktails while listening to haunted tales at the Queen Mary Monday evening or attend a drag show at the iconic Hamburger Mary’s Thursday night. 

Health and wellness are at the forefront of this week’s offerings, with free flu vaccination clinics Friday and Wednesday, a parent information workshop on children’s mental health Friday morning, and a community discussion on well-being Monday evening.

Those seeking live entertainment have their pick between a haunted house tour with eerie tales at the Historic Bembridge House on Friday night, a choral performance Sunday evening, or a motorcycle meetup and concert Saturday night.

Friday 10/3

Community Flu Vaccination Clinic: 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Long Beach Health Department will offer free flu vaccinations at Ramona Park (3301 E. 65th St.). No appointment is required. Vaccines will be available while supplies last. Free.

Whisper in the Walls – Haunted Tours: 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The public is invited to the Historic Bembridge House (953 N. Park Circle) for a guided, spooky tour through one of Long Beach’s most storied historic homes. Guests will explore dimly lit rooms, staircases and attics filled with eerie tales and ghostly whispers. General admission tickets can be purchased for $28.52 on Eventbrite.

Saturday 10/4

Filipino Family Storytime: 11 a.m. to noon. Families are invited to the Harte Neighborhood Library (1595 W. Willow St.) for a bilingual storytime in Filipino and English with Jenn Estacio, children’s author and founder of Flipp Family and Kubo LB. The program will feature stories, songs and more. Free.

PawFest Halloween: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Families and their pups are invited to El Dorado East Regional Park (7550 E. Spring St.) for a weekend of Halloween fun, featuring a costume contest, dog fashion show, Snifari adventure, flavored bubble zone, foam party, vendors and more. General admission tickets can be purchased for $12 on the online platform Ticket Tailor.

Sew It Goes: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The public is invited to the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library (5870 Atlantic Ave.) to design and sew their own luchador-inspired plushie to take home. No prior sewing experience is required. Both hand and machine sewing options will be available. Supplies are limited. This program is appropriate for ages 12 and up. Free.

Riffs & Rides R 12 Concert: 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The public is invited to Long Beach BMW Motorcycles (2202 E. 28th St., Signal Hill) for the final show of the R 12 Concert Series, featuring the cover band Flashpants. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the band takes the stage at 8 p.m. The event includes raffle prizes for those who ride motorcycles to the show, plus food from Wood Fire Pies and beer from Ten Mile Brewing. All ages welcome. Free tickets are available on the online platform Ticket Tailor.

Sunday 10/5

The Big Sing: 4:30 p.m. The public is invited to join the Long Beach Camerata Singers for this live performance conducted by Grammy Award-winner Dr. James K. Bass. The concert at Our Lady Refuge Catholic Church (5195 Stearns St.) will feature local voices performing works such as Hallelujah Chorus, Zadok the Priest, Ave Verum Corpus, and more. General admission cost $25 on the Long Beach Camerata Singers website.

Dream Theater – Parasomnia Tour: 8 p.m. The public is invited to the Long Beach Terrace Theater (300 E. Ocean Blvd.) for an evening with Dream Theater, showcasing their 16th studio album “Parasomnia.” Fans can expect a mix of new songs from the album, along with classic hits spanning the band’s four-decade career. Tickets are on sale now at Ticketmaster.com starting at $64.70.

Monday 10/6

An Evening of Health, Wellness & Community: 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to the Bay Shore Neighborhood Library (195 Bay Shore Ave.) for a roundtable discussion with health and wellness professionals, along with the hosts of The Lovesick Podcast. Guests can ask questions, connect with experts and gather helpful resources to support their well-being. No registration required. Free.

Spooky Speakeasy: 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Those 21 and older are invited to the Queen Mary (1126 Queens Hwy) for a night of ghostly stories paired with specialty cocktails. The evening includes three haunted tales, three matching drinks and admission onboard the ship. Tickets can be purchased for $74.20 on the Queen Mary’s website and includes the cost of drinks.

Tuesday 10/7

Rancho Storytime: 10 a.m. to 10:30 am. Parents and caregivers are invited to bring young children to listen to a story read out loud at Rancho Los Cerritos (4600 Virginia Road) Attendees are welcome to bring blankets, strollers and snacks. Free.

Noche de Cine: 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Families are invited to the El Dorado Neighborhood Library (2900 Studebaker Road) for a screening of the Disney’s animated film “Coco.” All ages are welcome. Free.

Wednesday 10/8

LinkedIn Made Simple for Teens: 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Teens are invited to the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library (5870 Atlantic Ave.) for a hands-on workshop on building and optimizing a LinkedIn profile. Participants will learn how to write a strong bio, select a professional photo, make meaningful connections and practice effective networking techniques. Free.

Generative AI, Digital Skills & Data Privacy Workshop: 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The public is invited to the Doris Topsy-Elvord Community Center at Houghton Park (6301 Myrtle Ave.) for a free workshop hosted by the City’s Technology and Innovation Department. Participants will learn about generative AI, practice using AI tools safely, and gain practical tips on data privacy and cybersecurity. All skill levels are welcome. Registration through the City’s event calendar is required. Free.

Thursday 10/9

Discover the Axolotl: 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Kids are invited to the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library (5870 Atlantic Ave.) to learn about a unique creature from Mexico, the axolotl. The program will cover the axolotl’s biology, Aztec mythology and conservation efforts. Free.

Dee-licious Thursday: 8 p.m. The public is invited to Hamburger Mary’s Long Beach (330 Pine Ave.) for a drag show featuring live entertainment, food and cocktails. Seating begins at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.
