Things to do in Long Beach: Midsummer scream, Gaza fundraiser, sewing workshop and more!

Spend the upcoming week attending movie screenings, concerts and community events all over Long Beach. 

Those looking to sample the local cuisine can explore a range of tasting events, from the Museum of Latin American Art’s Tequila & Tunes event Friday to Bevs, Bites & Beats, a downtown culinary party planned for Saturday evening. Vendors selling food, art, and handcrafted items can be found at the 714 Market at 2ND & PCH Saturday afternoon as well as the monthly Long Beach Antique Market Sunday morning at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Film fans can enjoy outdoor screenings of “Wicked” and “Captain America: Brave New World” in Long Beach parks, while fans of the horror and Halloween genre can find tricks and treats at the three-day Midsummer Scream convention. As for live music, there will be free concerts Saturday at Long Beach Airport and the Bandshell at Recreation Park.

Friday 8/15

Tequila & Tunes: 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Enjoy curated tequila tastings, karaoke sessions, DJ sets and the chance to win opportunity drawings at the Museum of Latin American Art (628 Alamitos Ave.). This 21+ event will begin with a guided walkthrough of the exhibitions in the museum’s gallery. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online

Midsummer Scream: 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Start spooky season early during this three-day Halloween and horror convention at the Long Beach Convention Center (300 E. Ocean Blvd.). Attendees can shop horror-themed vendors, see live entertainment, peruse Halloween attractions and walk through haunting displays. Special guests appearing throughout the weekend include actors David Dastmalchian, Cassandra Peterson, Henry Winkler and Lind Blair, along with legendary director John Carpenter. The convention will continue Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets start at $40 and can be purchased online.

Movie Night: 7 p.m. Care Culture Collaborative and Rose Bar (Lindero Avenue & E. Broadway) will host a screening of the 2004 documentary film “The Take” about a group of Argentinian auto workers who decide to occupy their former factory and transform it into a worker cooperative. Free.

Movie in the Park: 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. The public is invited to an outdoor screening of the movie “Wicked” at Wardlow Park (3457 Stanbridge Ave.). Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, blanket and picnic food. The movie will begin at dusk and there will be free popcorn. Free.

Saturday 8/16

Summer Fest at 4th & Termino: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors to E. Fourth St. and Termino Avenue in Belmont Heights are invited to this neighborhood block party. Explore various wellness vendors, small business pop-ups, discounted items, art shows, music from DJ Tuan Digglz, live portraits, aura photos and a photobooth. There will also be food from Bik-Lun, Lemongrass Khmer Grill and Fred’s Breads. Free. 

Yap & Stitch: Noon to 3 p.m. Bring friends, your latest project and your favorite coffee to the monthly meet-up of Yap & Stitch at KUBO Long Beach (3976 Atlantic Ave.). Free.

714 Market: Noon to 6 p.m. Shop local makers and artisans, attend character meet and greets, partake in a scavenger hunt and much more at 2ND & PCH (6400 E. Pacific Coast Hwy.). This pop-up market will also feature a live butterfly garden, a beekeeper, face painting and pet portraits. Free. 

Country Line Dancing: 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. For the penultimate show in its 7 Saturdays of Summer series, the Bandshell at Recreation Park (4900 E. Seventh St.) will host an afternoon of country music and line dancing with Cindi Massengale and headlined by Sean Oliu and the Coastline Cowboys. Free. 

Bevs, Bites & Beats: 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Downtown Long Beach Alliance and KCRW are teaming up for the final Taste of Downtown event of the summer. Attendees can sample bites, sip beer, wine and cocktails and hear tunes from Manuel the Band and KCRW DJs Jeremy Sole and DJ Nobody in front of the ferris wheel at The Pike (21 W. Shoreline Drive). Tasting tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite in various packs, starting at $7.18. Admission is Free. 

Airwaves: 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Groove to the Jamaican jams of Rocksteady during this evening concert at Long Beach Airport (4100 Donald Douglas Drive). This performance will be opened by brass bands Western Standard Time and The Trojanites. Free but RSVP is required through Eventbrite

Sunday 8/17

Long Beach Antique Market: 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Every third Saturday of the month, shop antiques, knick-knacks, collectibles, clothing, vinyl and more at Veterans Memorial Stadium (4901 E. Conant St.). Admission is $10, while children ages 12 and under can enter for free. 

Historical Downtown Bicycle Tour: 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. As part of its Summer of Architecture, Long Beach Heritage will host an immersive 10-mile bike tour of the City’s historic neighborhoods, including East Village, Bluff Park and Carroll Park. Long Beach Heritage President Chris Hogan will guide cyclists from downtown to the Bembridge House for a home tour and light refreshments. Helmets are required and participants are advised to bring a water bottle. Tickets are $33.85 and can be purchased on Eventbrite.

Sip & Swap Social: 10 a.m. Enjoy a live DJ, mocktails, coffee, local vendors, including special guests Run Club Girls, and enjoy a swap and shop of clothing items at Diosa Collective (4421 E. Village Road). Attendees are requested to bring 7-11 gently worn pieces for trade on hangers for the swap and shop. Those who stop by can also purchase $5 raffle tickets or the chance to win a lash set, facial, sound bath, reiki session or free entry for the newest DIOSA wellness event. Free. 

Fundraiser Yard Sale: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Help raise money for Amjad, a citizen of Gaza who lost his leg while attempting to get aid for his family, during this community fundraiser at 2371 Pine Ave. The goal of this yard sale is to raise $1,000 to go towards Amjad’s medical expenses Those who cannot attend the event can still help out by donating to his GoFundMe. Free.

Long Beach Kite Festival: 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Pacific Kite Club will host its annual all-ages kite festival at Granada Beach (5100 Ocean Blvd.). Inspired by the kite-flying Shakrain Festival of Dhaka, Bangladesh, this event will include kite giveaways, kite-flying workshops, string-cutting challenges and Bangladeshi musical performances. There will also be face painting, a DJ and food and clothing vendors. Free.

Monday 8/18

Fiscal Year 2026 Community Budget Meeting: 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Residents are invited to share their budget priorities and contribute to the City’s annual fiscal budget process during this community meeting at Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library (5870 Atlantic Ave.). RSVP on the City’s online events calendar. Free.  

Movie in the Park: 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. The public is invited to an outdoor screening of the movie “Captain America: Brave New World” at Ramona Park (3301 E. 65th St.). Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, blanket and picnic food and enjoy free popcorn. Recreational activities will begin at 6 p.m. with the movie starting at dusk. Free.

Tuesday 8/19

Back-to-School Craft Night: 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Local kids can enjoy a meal and design a personalized pencil case and a backpack charm during a workshop led by Daisy Made at Dilly’s Sandwiches (4144 N. Viking Way). Meal choices include a turkey sandwich, ham & cheese sandwich, PB&J, grilled cheese or hot dog plus a bag of chips and a lemonade. Admission is $20 per child and must be paid online prior to the event. 

Dance Downtown Revolution: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Learn some new dance moves during this community movement session at Promenade Square Park (124 The Promenade N.). This event is open to dancers of all ages, abilities and skill levels. Free.

Wednesday 8/20

Romance, Food, and Flirty Fun in Fiction: 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Long Beach Public Library will host an online conversation with author Casey McQuiston to discuss her new culinary-themed romance “The Pairing.” Her previous works include “One Last Stop,” “Red, White & Royal Blue,” “I Kissed Shara Wheeler.” Register for this event to attend live or receive a recording. Free

Yoga: 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Local instructor Liza Gesuden will lead a trauma-informed restorative yoga class at KUBO Long Beach (3976 Atlantic Ave.) with intentional breath and movement. Yoga mats will be provided but participants are welcome to bring their own. Donation-based registration starts at $10, but nobody will be turned away due to lack of funds. All donations will go towards KUBO’s Long Beach Gives fundraiser.

Thursday 8/21

Mending Workshop: 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Radical Sewing Club will conduct a free mending workshop at Burnett Neighborhood Library (560 E. Hill St.). Bring in garments in need of repair or work on provided samples while learning to repair, embroider and upcycle clothing. Basic mending materials and supplies will be provided but participants are welcome to bring their own. Space is limited so online registration is required. Free. 

Art Days: 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Taking place every third Thursday at the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden (Earl Warren Drive), this art workshop series invites visitors to pursue their own project within the museum space. This month, artists will be using color pencils to create their masterpieces. Some supplies will be available but participants are encouraged to bring their own. Registration is $2 and can be done online

Plants & Pints: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. This terrarium workshop led by Plantiitas, and held at Trademark Brewing (233 E. Anaheim St.), will see participants create and decorate their own self-sustaining terrarium. Tickets are $57.33 and can be purchased on Eventbrite

Candlelight Long Beach: 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The intimate Candlelight concert series is coming to The Queen Mary (1126 Queens Hwy.) for an orchestral concert inside the Queen’s Salon. Audience members will hear the classical compositions of Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons.” Tickets are $54.50 and can be purchased online

Paletas & Print: 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Enjoy a sweet treat and bring a shirt, tote bag or other garment to Place LB (2172 Pacific Ave.) to screen print a “Free Palestine” design. Limited canvas materials will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Free.
