The start of a new year is teeming with possibilities, and events in Long Beach this week give residents the chance to learn new skills and meet new people.

Local businesses and libraries are hosting fun workshops and group activities, such as a beginner-friendly chess club Friday, an intro to journaling workshop Sunday at KUBO LB, a sourdough starter workshop Tuesday at the Harte Neighborhood Library or a weekly crochet club at Bach Neighborhood Library Wednesday.

For a serene beginning to the new year, residents can attend a morning nature walk through Los Cerritos Wetland Saturday, a breathwork and sound bath Sunday at Compound, or a paint and sip night at Far Field Beer Co. Monday night.

Build connections through events like gothic rave Friday night at Supply & Demand, a board game meetup Saturday night at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Long Beach, or a lesbian speed dating night at The Wicked Wolf Thursday.
