Things to do in Long Beach: ‘No Other Land,’ herb workshop, Battle of the Bands and more!

There are plenty of community activities to check out in Long Beach and Signal Hill, spanning from markets and workshops to the two-day Long Beach BBQ Festival. 

On Friday, Signal Hill Public Library will be leading a session on Cambodian classical and social dances and Bay Shore Library will host a henna tattoo workshop as part of its ongoing AAPI Heritage Month programming. Residents can also support AAPI-owned businesses during 2ND & PCH’s free AAPI Market on Sunday from noon to 6 p.m., featuring small businesses, food vendors and cultural showcases.

The Queen Mary is welcoming in guests with complimentary admission Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. during its Community Day, with over 20 locations around the ship open to explore. Community members are also invited to enjoy a relaxing sound bath during the second installment of the 2025 Willow Springs Experiences Sunday.

Friday 5/23

Long Beach BBQ Fest: Noon to 9 p.m. The third annual Long Beach BBQ Fest hosted by Axiom Kitchen and NoahS’s Arc Foundation will feature dozens of local BBQ vendors with their best smoked, sauced and rubbed specialties for attendees to enjoy along with vendors, music, dancing and games beside the scenic Shoreline Aquatic Park (200 Aquarium Way) on Friday and Saturday. Tickets range from $25 to $250 for different packages, and can be purchased on Eventbrite

Henna Workshop: 3 p.m. In honor of AAPI Heritage Month, teens and tweens can learn how to do mehndi, or henna tattoos, at the Bay Shore Library (195 Bay Shore Ave.). Free. 

Cambodian Classical and Social Dance Workshop: 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Learn the history, meaning and choreography of Cambodian classical and social dances at the Signal Hill Public Library (1800 E. Hill St.). Attendees are advised to wear comfortable shoes and clothing. Due to limited space, RSVPs are required on Eventbrite. Free.

Saturday 5/24

Weekly Food Distribution: 12:30 p.m. Volunteers are requested for Care Culture Collaborative’s weekly food distribution on Saturdays at Kim Long Market (324 Anaheim St.). People can help pass out hot meals or take a small box of roughly 30 meals to pass out in their own neighborhood. Donations are also requested through Venmo @Maxmith. Message @careculturecollab_lb on Instagram for more details. Free. 

Pride Party: 1 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Enjoy drag bingo and live DJ sets at this all-day pride party at Steelcraft Long Beach (3768 Long Beach Blvd.) with food and drinks. Free. 

Battle of the Bands: 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The third annual High School Battle of the Bands will feature seven local student bands facing off at the Bandshell at Recreation Park (4900 E. Seventh St.). Free.

Sunday 5/25

AAPI Market: Noon to 6 p.m. Celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with an inspired artisan market highlighting AAPI-owned small businesses, food options and cultural showcases at 2ND & PCH (6480 Pacific Coast Highway). Free. 

‘No Other Land’: 1:30 p.m.; 4 p.m. Academy Award winning documentary film “No Other Land” is returning for a limited run at the Long Beach Art Theatre (2025 E. Fourth St.). The film shows how the Palestinian community of Masafer Yatta is being destroyed by the Israeli occupation, and an unlikely alliance with a journalist from the other side. Tickets are $13 for general admission and can be purchased online or at the door. 

Willow Springs Experiences: 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The second Willow Springs Experiences event of the 2025 spring season, recommended for ages 10 and up, will be A Sound Bath in the Park with Sounds of Love. Attendees are encouraged to bring a yoga mat, towel or blanket, and a pillow if desired to this session at Willow Springs Park (2745 Orange Ave.). Participants are asked to meet up in the park’s parking lot. Reservations are recommended through emailing WSPExperiences@gmail.com. Free.

Monday 5/26

Mobile Recess Program: 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Kids between the ages of 5 and 14 are invited to participate in sports and arts and crafts activities in a safe environment during this City-run after-school program at Rose Park (Intersection of Eighth Street and Obispo Avenue) Free.

The Rum Curious Summit: 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Celebrate Memorial Day with this rum-centric celebration at Altar Society Brewing (230 Pine Ave.). This event is an immersive experience for rum lovers and the rum-curious alike. Attendees ages 21 and over can enjoy unlimited tastings of 120+ rums from over 30 brands, specialty cocktails crafted by top SoCal bartenders, food, live music by The Hilo Hi-Flyers and educational seminars with industry legends. Tuesday 5/27

Queen Mary Community Day: 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Enjoy complimentary admission to the Queen Mary (1126 Queens Hwy.) and explore the historic ship. Guests will have access to over 20 locations throughout the ship, including the engine room, wheelhouse and Commodore’s office. The ship also features exhibits such as “Their Finest Hours: Winston Churchill and The Queen Mary” and “The Cunard Story,” as well as the new Queen Mary Art Gallery. Free admission.

City Employment Workshop: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Job seekers are invited to learn about the City of Long Beach’s hiring process as well as current and upcoming employment opportunities at Burnett Neighborhood Library (560 E. Hill St.). Free.

Mending and Sewing Workshop: 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Join local artist Nica Calonsag at the Harte Neighborhood Library (1595 W. Willow St.) for a hands-on Mending and Sewing Workshop focused on sustainability. Participants will learn three basic hand-stitching techniques to repair or customize clothes. No sewing experience is necessary. Supplies and informational packets will be provided, though attendees are welcome to bring their own materials. Free admission.

Free Baby Shower: 10 a.m. to noon. The Long Beach Community Resource Center (5599 Atlantic Ave.) is hosting a free baby shower for expectant mothers between 4 and 9 months pregnant. The event will include gift baskets, baby clothing, diapers and wipes, a car seat and baby swing raffle and postpartum resources. Baby Bop: 11 a.m. to noon. Parents and caregivers of babies under 1 year old are invited to the Dana Neighborhood Library (3680 Atlantic Ave.) to enjoy stories, songs, rhymes, fingerplay and gentle bounces. Free.

Board Game Night: 6 p.m. to midnight. Board game lovers 21 and older are invited to play a variety of games at The Wicked Wolf (2332 Pacific Ave.) every Wednesday night in the den. Bocaditos will be selling carnitas tacos outside. Free entry.

Thursday 5/29

Parent & Baby Workshop: 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. New parents can learn about their newborn’s behavior and cues, how to build a healthy attachment, infant mental health, early development and more at this free workshop for parents with babies 3 months or younger. Babies are welcome, and participants will be entered into a raffle. Email stalvarez@dmh.lacounty.gov for the address and more details. Free. 

Free Diapers Distribution: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Long Beach families with babies under 2 years old are invited to receive free diapers at this event held by Centro CHA at Cesar Chavez Park (401 Golden Ave.). Verification of benefits (such as Medi-Cal or CalFresh) or low income status is required. Walk-ups are welcome. Free. 

Healing Herb Hour: 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. 7th St. Collective will host a discussion of the medicinal and spiritual properties of rosemary led by The Queer Herbalist (@TheQueerHerbalist). Tea will also be shared as part of a ritual for connecting with the plant. Doors will open for the Healing Herb Hour at 4 p.m., with the event beginning at 4:30 p.m. Masks are required and will be available. Free. (811 E. Seventh St.)
