Things to do in Long Beach: Rivalry volleyball, Super Bowl at the Queen Mary and more!

This week’s slate of events offers a wide range of activities, spanning from sports and cinema to storytimes and beyond. 

On Friday night, a SoCal men’s volleyball rivalry will be renewed when the UCLA Bruins go up against Long Beach State at the Walter Pyramid. Plus, The Art Theatre will have a treat for movie lovers, with a screening of the cult classic film “Harold & Maude.” 

With the rainy forecast expected to subside by Friday night, residents can enjoy ample outside time this weekend with an architectural walking tour of the East Village Saturday afternoon and a yoga class Sunday morning on the grass by Marine Stadium. 

During the week, there will be a plethora of storytimes at local libraries, along with one Tuesday morning at Rancho Los Cerritos. Community members can make their voices heard during a town hall for the Orange Avenue Backbone Bikeway project Thursday night at the Expo Arts Center.

Friday 2/7

Curator-Led Exhibition Tour: 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Curator Paul Loya will guide visitors through the exhibition “Motion Pictures” at the Long Beach Museum of Art (2300 E Ocean Blvd.). Admission is discounted at $6 on Fridays.

Volleyball Game: 7 p.m. The UCLA Bruins will take on the Long Beach State men’s volleyball team inside the Walter Pyramid (1250 N. Bellflower Blvd.). Tickets can be purchased on the university’s website starting at $38.

Movie Screening: 10 p.m. The Art Theatre (2025 E. Fourth St.) will be screening the cult classic film “Harold & Maude,” which explores a taboo romance between a young man and an elderly woman who meet at a funeral. Tickets are available on the theater’s website for $15.

Saturday 2/8

World Cinema Film Series: 1 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. The public is invited to back-to-back screenings of the 1999 Chinese comedic drama, “Shower (Xi zao)” and the 2006 Belgian romantic comedy-drama “Odette Toulemonde” at the Billie Jean King Main Library (200 W. Broadway). Free.

Valentine Cobweb Cards: 2:30 p.m. Learn about and create a 19th-century-inspired cobweb card at the Dana Neighborhood Library (3680 Atlantic Ave.). This hands-on Valentine’s Day craft is open to ages 7 and up. Free.

Architectural Walking Tour: 3 p.m. Join local nonprofit Long Beach Heritage for this exploration of architecture in the East Village Arts District. The tour features Victorian cottages, luxury apartments and buildings from the post-WWII era, with stops including the Royal Hotel, Lafayette Complex, Broadlind Hotel, Cooper Arms and the Artaban. The walking tour begins at the Linden Avenue entrance to the Cooper Arms Condominiums (19 Linden Ave.) and covers approximately 1.5 miles. This event is held on the second Saturday of each month. Tickets can be purchased for $17.85 on Eventbrite.

Sunday 2/9

Outdoor Yoga: 11 a.m. Join Latino Outdoors Los Angeles for a morning of movement and community at Marine Stadium (5255 E. Paoli Way). Enjoy an outdoor yoga session on the grass led by instructor Angelica Tonatzin, followed by complimentary post-yoga snacks. Attendees should bring their own yoga mats. All are welcome. ‘The Big Game’ Watch Party: 3 p.m. Watch the Super Bowl on giant screens at the Queen Mary (1126 Queens Hwy.). Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Tickets can be purchased for $10 on the Queen Mary’s website. Parking is $10 with validation.

Monday 2/10

Low-Cost Vaccine Clinic: 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Long Beach Animal Care Services (7700 E Spring St.) and Community Animal Medicine Project will be providing vaccines and services to pets at discounted prices. Services include microchipping, tapeworm treatment, nail trimming, flea/tick treatment and more. All dogs must be on a leash, and all cats should be in a carrier. Please bring the pet’s previous vaccine records. For more information, call 562-570-7387. Prices will vary.

GetSetUp New Member Orientation: 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Older adults (55+) can learn how to access online classes through the Long Beach Public Library’s partnership with GetSetUp. This virtual session will guide senior library card holders through booking classes, finding interests and connecting with others. To register, visit the City’s online event calendar. Free.

Tuesday 2/11

Rancho Storytime: 10 a.m. to 10:30 am. Parents and caregivers are invited to bring young children to listen to a story read out loud at Rancho Los Cerritos (4600 Virginia Road) Attendees are welcome to bring blankets, strollers and snacks. Free.

Filipino Family Storytime: 11 a.m. Filipina-American author Rachell Abalos will read her debut picture book “Our Nipa Hut” at the Harte Neighborhood Library (1595 W. Willow St.). Free.

Softball Game: 4 p.m. Winthrop University and Long Beach State University’s softball teams will face off at the LBSU Softball Complex (1250 N Bellflower Blvd.). Tickets can be purchased for $13 on the university’s website.

Family Storytime: 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Families with children ages 5 and under are invited to the Mark Twain Neighborhood Library (1401 E. Anaheim St.) to enjoy stories, songs, crafts and playtime. Free.

Wednesday 2/12

Bloom with Love: 4 p.m. Visitors of all ages are invited to make flower bouquets for their valentines at the Mark Twain Neighborhood Library (1401 E. Anaheim St.). Free.

Live Music: 7 p.m. Local musicians Natalie Mendoz, Jason Fabus and the Tom Dante Quartet will be performing at the Gaslamp (6251 E Pacific Coast Hwy). Tickets can be purchased for $10 on the Gaslamp’s website or for $15 at the door.

Thursday 2/13

Bird Walk: 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Residents and birders can explore local bird species in this guided walk at Ranchos Los Cerritos (4600 Virginia Road). Staff will be available to answer bird and nature-related questions and residents are encouraged to bring their binoculars. Free, but registration through the rancho’s website is required. 

Storytime and Illustrations: 4 p.m. Award-winning author and illustrator Mirelle Ortega will host a special storytime at the Billie Jean King Main Library (200 W. Broadway), followed by a live illustration demonstration. Some of her favorite illustrations will also be on display inside the library. Light refreshments will be served. Free admission.

City Employment Workshop: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Job seekers are invited to learn about the City of Long Beach’s hiring process as well as current and upcoming employment opportunities at Burnett Neighborhood Library (560 E. Hill St.). Register for this event on the City’s online event calendar. Free.

Orange Avenue Backbone Bikeway Town Hall: 6 p.m. Long Beach Public Works will host a community town hall at the Expo Arts Center (4321 Atlantic Ave.) to garner public opinion on the Orange Avenue Backbone Bikeway, which is intended to make Orange and Alamitos Avenues more accessible and safer for multiple modes of transportation. Free.
