Things to do in Long Beach: Signal Hill Centennial Celebrations, Art Party for Palestine and more!

Experience a week of diverse events hosted by various community members and orgs in Long Beach and Signal Hill. 

Engage with community resources at the Spring Festival hosted by local nonprofit Centro CHA Saturday, explore culture at the Holland Festival on Sunday, or learn about local initiatives from the River Park Coalition Saturday afternoon. 

Kids can enjoy Spanish Storytime at the Signal Hill Public Library Monday afternoon and a Mobile Recess Program at Hudson Park, while teens can participate in the Teen Arcade Tuesday evening at Burnett Neighborhood Library. Creatives can attend workshops to learn about water marbling and origami.

Friday 4/26

Low-Cost Vaccine Clinic: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Long Beach Animal Care Services (7700 E Spring St.) will be offering discounted vaccines and microchips for pets. Cats must be brought in carriers and dogs must be leashed. Services are available on a first-come, first-served basis for the first 60 pets. Pet owners are advised to bring any records of previous vaccines. Treatment prices vary.

Movie in the Park: 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. The public is invited to an outdoor screening of the movie “WALL-E” at Lincoln Park (101 Pacific Ave.). Attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs and a picnic-style dinner. Free.

Jhoanna Belfer runs Bel Canto Books, a bookstore focused on showcasing diversity and representation through its collection. Saturday 4/27

Spring Festival: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Centro CHA will be hosting this community resource fair at Cesar Chavez Park (401 Golden Ave.). There will be art activities, music, food and more. Attendees will also be able to learn about water-wise yards. Free.

Kitten Care 101: 11 a.m. to noon. Local nonprofit Little Lion Foundation and the Long Beach Animal Care Services will teach this workshop on how to bottle feed kittens in the midst of kitten season. This workshop is free, but attendees are asked to bring donations of baby blankets, heat discs, Breeder’s Edge formula or kitten bottles. 

Grand Opening: Noon to 6 p.m. Local book store Bel Canto Books will be celebrating the grand opening of its first stand-alone location at 2106 E Fourth Street. There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at 1 p.m. Small gifts will be included with purchases. Free to attend.

Centennial Celebration: 2 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The City of Signal Hill will be celebrating its 100-year anniversary at Signal Hill Park (2175 Cherry Ave.). There will be an opening ceremony, games, crafts, food, live entertainment and a drone show. Free.

Ode to the Los Angeles River: 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. In honor of Earth Day and National Poetry Month, join Woodbury University professor Mike Sonksen at Billie Jean King Main Library (200 W. Broadway) for an afternoon exploring poetry inspired by the Los Angeles River and its watershed. Limited seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Free.

Art Party Fundraiser for Palestine: 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Residents can enjoy food and music while making art, joining with the community and raising funds for Palestine at 6261 Orange Ave. The price for this event is donation based/pay what you can.

Sunday 4/28

Kidical Mass: 7:15 a.m. to 9 a.m. Families with kids of all ages are invited to this monthly group bike ride through Bixby Knolls. Families can meet in the back parking lot of Pixie Toys (3914 Atlantic Ave.). Free.

Touch-A-Truck: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Multiple large vehicles such as fire engines, school buses and more will be parked at Granada Beach Parking Lot (5000 E Ocean Blvd.) for the public to look at and touch. This event is organized by Justin Rudd. Free.

Holland Festival: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This festival aims to bring together Dutch Americans across the state and nation to celebrate their heritage at P.O.A. Park (7390 Carson Blvd.). The event will feature vendors, craft beer, Dutch and Indo-Dutch food, dancing, live music and more. If tickets are purchased online be sure to print them and bring them to the festival. Children ages 12 and under get in free. Dogs are not permitted at the festival. Tickets can be purchased for $10 cash only, in-person on the day of the festival. 

Children’s Art Workshop: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Join the Museum of Latin American Art (628 Alamitos Ave.) and Con Todo Press, a Latina-owned publishing company, for a reading and workshop in celebration of their newest bilingual book “How To Stuff A Piñata/Como Rellenar Una Piñata.” Author Naibe Reynoso will be onsite for the reading, followed by a piñata workshop with all materials provided. Walk-ins are welcome. No registration is needed. Free.

Riverpark Meeting: 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. The public is invited to learn about the work of a local nonprofit organization, the Riverpark Coalition, at the Expo Arts Center (4321 Atlantic Ave.) Register by emailing rsvp@riverparkcoalition.org. Free.

Monday 4/29

Spanish Storytime: 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Children of all ages will be able to enjoy Spanish stories read by library staff at the Signal Hill Public Library (1800 E Hill St.). Free.

Mobile Recess Program: 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Kids between the ages of 5 and 14 are invited to participate in sports and arts and crafts activities in a safe environment during this City-run after-school program at Hudson Park (2335 Webster Ave.). Free.

Tuesday Talk: Noon. Curator Erin Stout will discuss artist Nancy Graves’ sculpture, Sequi, which has been installed in the lower campus of Cal State Long Beach. This event will be held by Carolyn Campagna Kleefeld Contemporary Art Museum (1250 N Bellflower Blvd.). Free.

Teen Arcade: 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Teens are invited to the Burnett Neighborhood Library (560 E. Hill St.) to play video games, board games and watch movies. Free.

Wednesday 5/1

Suminagashi Workshop: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Join artist Stacy Wong at Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library (5870 Atlantic Ave. 90805) for a workshop on Japanese paper marbling. This workshop aims to equip participants with a foundational understanding of this art form. Utilizing non-toxic inks, water, and suminagashi techniques, attendees will craft a set of four unique note cards and envelopes. Free.

Live Theater: 7:30 p.m. International City Theater (330 E Seaside Way) will be putting on a performance of the play “What the Constitution Means to Me,” about a young girl who earns her college tuition by winning debate competitions on the Constitution. General admission tickets cost $37, and can be purchased on the theater’s website.

Thursday 5/2

Sidewalk to Success: 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. This community town hall at Stearns Champions Park (4520 E 23rd St.) will explain the new street vending laws to aspiring entrepreneurs, existing vendors and community stakeholders. Free.

Origami Workshop: 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. During this workshop at Burnett Neighborhood Library (560 E. Hill St. 90806), school-age kids will practice the art of origami. Free.

Candle Workshop: 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Attendees are invited to Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library (5870 Atlantic Ave. 90805) for an hour of arts and crafts. Participants will have the opportunity to decorate their own candles using materials provided by the library. As this craft involves melted wax, it’s recommended to dress accordingly for a potentially messy experience. Free.
