Long Beach residents can enjoy various free nighttime events this week, with the summer heat continuing to roll in.
Enjoy all kinds of art at KCRW Summer Nights on Friday, the Vans Warped Tour beginning Saturday, “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” screenings throughout the week and Long Beach Municipal Band performances celebrating the ‘60s and ‘70s music with “Legends of Vinyl: The Bands That Defined An Era.”
Residents can also adopt dogs during the Summer Buddy Special Friday, visit Sharks @ The Beach Saturday and hear a live performance from cellist Chelsea Wong Wednesday.
Friday 7/24
Summer Buddy Special: 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Long Beach Animal Care Services (7700 E. Spring St.) is holding a “Summer Buddy Special” from July 8-31 where attendees can adopt any dog for $25 (excluding puppies six months and under). Each dog goes home spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
KCRW Summer Nights: 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Head to the Museum of Latin American Art (628 Alamitos Ave.) and enjoy food trucks, a full bar and an open-air courtyard as music, art and community come together. Free for all ages, RSVP online.

‘The Importance of Being Earnest’: 8 p.m. Enjoy one of the most celebrated comedies in the English language at the Helen Borgers Theatre (4250 Atlantic Ave.). “The Importance of Being Earnest” is a play about two young men whose identities lead to romantic entanglement and social absurdities, with a splash of the 1980s. Veterans Park Cleanup: 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Connect with the community at Veterans Park (101 E. 28th St.) for the Veterans Park community cleanup. Bring your mat for a yoga warm-up led by Micaela Salatino from Long Beach Time Exchange from 9:10 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Free.
Sharks @ The Beach: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Watch live marine animals, view shark research tech and ask Dr. Chris Lowe questions at the Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) Hall of Science (1250 Bellflower Blvd.). Open to all ages. Free.
Vans Warped Long Beach: 11 a.m. Enjoy the two-day alternative music and action sports festival, which features 100 live bands, BMX and skateboard exhibitions and more at the Shoreline Waterfront (386 E. Shoreline Drive). General admission prices for one day are $119 and two-day general admission is $209. Tickets are on sale on their website.
Our Budget, Our Future: Summer Seaside Social: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Spend an afternoon with your neighborhood where you can connect, have fun and learn more about how the City budget impacts our community. Black Neighborhood Tenant Council: 6 p.m. This monthly meeting invites Black renters and homeowners to learn about local housing laws and advocacy, the power of community power and how to deal with a variety of housing and renting issues at The Philadelphian (2640 Santa Fe Ave.). At this month’s meeting, attendees will hear from a local historian about preserving Black neighborhood history, and from another guest about the Long Beach Community Land Trust. Guests can also learn about warning signs residents are noticing in their buildings and neighborhoods, connect those changes to local development and policy decisions, and collect ideas for a possible anti-displacement strategy the BNTC could prioritize in the future.
