Things to do in Long Beach: Zine workshop, bar trivia, watercolor workshop and more!

The year is off to a good start, with plenty of things to do around town for everyone. Kids can enjoy crafting at a local library and water coloring at the Museum of Latin American Art.

The over 21 crowd can end hump-day with a game of trivia at a local watering hole. Nature lovers can appreciate the local marine life on a whale watching tour or volunteer to help clean the wetlands, while creative types can learn about sculpture and watercolor at local museums.

Friday 1/5

Food Truck Pop Up: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cousins Maine Lobster will be selling their signature seafood dishes from their food truck parked at 5531 E 23rd St. Menu prices vary.

Artful Evenings: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Ceramicist Thomas Martinez Pilnik will be teaching a workshop at the Long Beach Museum of Art (2300 E Ocean Blvd.), where participants will learn some basics of working with clay and create a sculpture of their own hands. Free.

Bixby Knolls First Fridays: The Atlantic corridor will become a lively jazz scene for Bixby Knolls’ first First Fridays celebration of the year. Over 10 businesses will host live music, while the Expo Arts Center and Able Arts Work gallery will show their current exhibits and eateries will offer specials all night. Entry is free.

Saturday 1/6

Recycle Your Mattress: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents are invited to drop off their unwanted mattresses and box springs at 970 W. Chester Pl. to be recycled. Free.

Los Cerritos Habitat Restoration: 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Aquarium of the Pacific and Los Cerritos Wetland are partnering to host this habitat restoration event on the first Saturday of each month. The restoration will focus on non-native weed removal and rare native plant conservation. The event will be led by trained naturalists and local educators. Closed-toed shoes, a hat, sunscreen and a reusable water bottle are all highly recommended. Children under 14 must have an adult with them. Participants will meet at the corner of PCH Highway and First Street in Seal Beach at 10:15 a.m. Free to attend. 

Youth Crafts: 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Teens and tweens are invited to Harte Neighborhood Library (1595 W. Willow St.) to make their own confetti poppers out of recycled materials. Supplies and snacks will be provided. Free.

Zine Workshop: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Intentions will be set through zines at Dainty Disco’s (5659 Atlantic Ave.) first event of the year, an “In My 2024 Era” zine workshop led by Bruxita Linda. Tickets come with supplies to decorate and two templates to choose from and can be purchased for $30 through Venmo @DaintyDisco. Message the shop on Instagram if you do not have Venmo.

Sunday 1/7

Kids’ Winter Art Workshop: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Children of all ages are invited to the Museum of Latin American Art (628 Alamitos Ave.) to each create their own winter-inspired watercolor painting. All materials will be provided. Limited space. First-come, first-served. Free.

Open Mic: 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wrigley Coffee (437 W Willow St.) is hosting an open mic night where local creatives can share their work. Entrance costs $5 at the door, or $4 on Eventbrite.

Monday 1/8

Coworking Day: 9 a.m. Home Office LLC (1850 E Willow St.), a workspace for remote workers who can’t or don’t want to work from their homes, is inviting remote workers to try a complimentary day in their space. Free.

Long Beach Whale Watch and Dolphin Tour: Noon to 2:30 p.m. During this boat tour hosted by Harbor Breeze Cruises (100 Aquarium Way) attendees will search Long Beach’s waters for whales, dolphins and other marine life. Tickets are $50 for adults, $45 for seniors and $35 for children between the ages of 3 and 11. Children under the age of 3 can board for free, but need a boarding pass.

Tuesday 1/9

Dive Into Shapes: 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Parents of small children between the ages of 3 and 5 are invited to bring their little ones to the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library (5870 Atlantic Ave.) for an interactive event that will teach them about different shapes. Free.

State of the City: 5:30 p.m. Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson and various City officials will host the annual State of the City, providing an overview of 2023 and plans for 2024, including many youth-centric updates at the Long Beach Terrace Theater (300 E Ocean Blvd). Free, but an online RSVP is required to attend.

Wednesday 1/10

Silent Movie Screening: Noon to 2 p.m. Residents can gather to watch the 1923 silent film “The Scare of Shame” at the Signal Hill Public Library (1800 E Hill St.). To register, call (562) 989-7323. Free. 

Free Meals: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Everytable will be distributing 50 ready-made meals to community members in need at the LGBTQ Center of Long Beach (2017 E Fourth St.). First-come, first-served. One meal per person. Free.

Book Launch: 6 p.m. Authors Soo Jin Lee, Linda Yoon and Helen Garcia will release their book “Where I Belong” at Bel Canto Books (3967 Atlantic Ave.). Reserve a spot at belcantobooks.net/events. Entry is free, and the book is $32.78 to purchase online. 

Brain Party Trivia: 7 p.m. Those 21 and older are invited to compete in a game of trivia at Alex’s Bar (2913 E Anaheim St.). Teams of up to 6 players are allowed. Participation costs $5 per player.

Thursday 1/11

Creative Club: 1 p.m. Able ARTS Work (4321 Atlantic Ave.) will be hosting open studio time where people of all abilities, ages and backgrounds can work on their art. Some supplies will be provided, but attendees are highly encouraged to bring their own. Free.

Watercolor Workshop: 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The Museum of Latin American Art (628 Alamitos Ave.) invites individuals to experiment with different watercolor techniques. To sign up, visit the museum’s website. This workshop costs $5.
