Thoughts from the Associate Publisher

Here we are with our annual Salute to Veterans issue. First, let me remind you of the Veterans Day parade tomorrow morning on Atlantic Avenue near Houghton Park. It’s always a great day and even better parade.

I want to tell all our readers about an organization that I am proud to be a member of for the past 16 years— the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Bellflower/Long Beach Lodge 888. Within the Elks organization is the ENF (Elks National Foundation). Part of the mission of the ENF is to honor the Elks’ pledge to never forget our veterans.
Many Chiefs of Voluntary Service at VA medical centers have stated, “Whenever we want something, we can count on the Elks.” In each of the 172 VA medical centers there is an Elks committee at work. Thousands of Elks give of their time, energy and resources so that the lives of our ill and aging veterans will become that much better. Hundreds of thousands of hours and as many dollars are invested in programs that are designed to keep us true to our pledge: “So long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them.” ENF has now broadened the program to include outpatients and homeless veterans. The Elks’ goal is to become the most visible force in voluntary service to our veterans.

On another note, Neena is finally at home and resting. Please don’t call her just yet as she needs to get her strength back so we can get her back to work at the Signal Tribune where she belongs.
