For the past 20 years or so, I have concentrated a lot of my time and efforts as part of the Bellflower/Long Beach Elks Lodge #888.
Our lodge is part of the California-Hawaii Elks Association (CHEA), whose motto is “Elks care, Elks share.” We are a charitable organization and since 1950 are best known for our support of families with disabled children. Our major project is often referred to as The Purple Pig, which is a piggy bank-style method of fundraising. By having each of our members take home a purple bank, fill it with their daily change, it reminds each of us members that giving is an everyday joy and necessary commitment to those less fortunate. It is our greatest gift.
Whether we help through various monetary support methods as bequests and living trusts, regular monthly donations, filling the Purple Pig with “A coin a day so they can walk, talk, see and play” (the major project motto). There are many ways to support the children and their families who may have had little hope without the CHEA intervention.
While each state has its own major project, CHEA is working to help kids with disabilities here in California and in Hawaii. Furthermore, each lodge is working to ensure the future and well-being of our youth by being involved with the Dictionary Project, Scouting, Hoop Shoot, drug awareness, Americanism essay contests and scholarships— second only to the number of those given by the federal government. You’ll also find us helping during the holidays with parties and gifts for disabled kids, including a Christmas party here in Long Beach at Ability First.
The CHEA serves not only disabled children, and children in general, but military veterans as well.
We are a proud organization with roots back to 1868. There have been many thousands of Elks who have not only helped millions of people but are involved as a group of men and women who enjoys the fellowship of other Elks members.
The official name of our organization is B.P.O.E., which stands for The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (or, as they are affectionately known, the Best People On Earth). Elks are American citizens, both men and woman, who want to help ensure that those in need are healthy and happy.
As a long-time member, as were my father and father-in-law, we find there is nothing better than serving our community through the various activities and charities supported by our local Elks lodge.
Patriotism runs deep through the heart of Elkdom as the members work to support our nation’s veterans. Whether it means cooking for them, celebrating with them on Veterans Day, singing karaoke with them, having them participate with us in parades or visiting them at veterans hospitals and other facilities, you can be assured that veterans will be honored as long as there are Elks members.
For those interested in the organization as a prospective member, or would just like a heck of a great meal at a low price, come to our lodge for dinner or stop by on the last Sunday of the month for the best breakfast ever and discover the many reasons that Elks are known to be some of the “Best People On Earth.” Let me know if you’d like to be my guest at one of the Sunday breakfast events.
