Thoughts from the Publisher

Well, the Sweetheart Sweepstakes is over for another year. Congratulations to all the lucky winners, and a big thanks to all the advertising and prize sponsors. This year we received more than 450 entries. With that kind of participation I know our sweepstakes was a success— we accomplished what we set out to do, and that was to encourage folks to visit local businesses.
During the process of prize pick-up and bucket drop-off/retrieval we at the Signal Tribune did a little Valentine’s Day shopping of our own. Now that’s what I call putting our money where our mouths are. I hope all of our readers are doing what they can to stimulate the local economy. Whether it’s getting your car washed at Bixby Knolls Car Wash, buying gifts at Roy Robbins or grabbing a bite at one of our local Long Beach or Signal Hill restaurants, it is very important to keep our dollars spent as close to home as possible.
Getting back to the subject at hand! I hope you all enjoyed entering the Sweetheart Sweepstakes as much as we enjoyed putting it all together. Winners were contacted by phone Wednesday afternoon and evening, and so you’ll know who they are we’ve included their names and what they won on page 7 of the paper.
Speaking of winners, two of the three candidates for Signal Hill City Council will be declared winners on Election Day, Tuesday, March 1. This has been an interesting campaign, to say the least, but since I don’t publicly endorse candidates— not yet anyhow— I won’t go into any details regarding my personal opinions on the subject. What I will say is please do take the time to attend the public forum being sponsored by Concerned Citizens of Signal Hill (CCSH), the Signal Tribune and the Willow Ridge Community Association. The event will take place Wednesday, Feb. 23 from 6:30pm to 8pm at the Willow Ridge Club House, near the corner of Willow and Junipero— just east of Costco. Bring your questions, friends and an open mind. This is a great opportunity to meet the candidates and hear what they think, know and believe to be true about Signal Hill.
Whether you live and/or work in Signal Hill (or nearby) the future of Signal Hill is important to you. Signal Hill Council members are the decision makers when it comes to some pretty serious matters, and it behooves locals to help decide whom those decision makers will be. Although endorsements and literature are very important to some folks, and many make their decisions on whom to vote for without ever meeting the candidates, we are lucky to have the chance to look them in the eyes and ask the hard questions. So, take the time to do your due diligence and come out to the forum if at all possible. You won’t be sorry. And remember!YOUR VOTE DOES COUNT!
