We have an extra special treat for our readers this week. With the overwhelming responses year after year for our Sweetheart Sweepstakes, we decided to do a condensed version to celebrate the importance of mothers in our lives. Appropriately called “Celebrating Mothers” (see page 11) the object is to cut out the four coupons from our sponsoring businesses (Donato’s Hair Salon, Delius Restaurant, UPS Store and About U Boutique) fill out the entries, drop them into the designated pink boxes at those businesses and wait to see if you receive a call declaring you a winner. Easy, huh? We have some pretty nice prizes too. There are three packages:
1. Delius Restaurant gift card, tickets for two for The Wedding Singer courtesy of Musical Theatre West, and a haircut & style from Donato’s Hair Salon
2. Dinner for two from Pho America, Found Theatre tickets for two, and a gift certificate from About “U” Boutique
3. $25 Restaurant.com gift card from the Signal Tribune, Long Beach Museum of Art family pass, and a designer “M is for Mom!not Maid” apron from KNBC Graphics
Basic rules are that you have to enter in person, no more than one entry per person at each business per week. For other rules see the details on page 11.
The entry coupons will appear in this week’s and next week’s issues, but don’t procrastinate. I will be picking up the boxes at noon on Wednesday, May 11. At that point, we will put all the entries into one bin and draw out the three winners. Those winners will be contacted by phone immediately, and then the winning names will appear in the paper on Friday, May 13. Remember, you can’t win if you don’t enter.

On an entirely different subject, I want to say “thank you” to the City of Signal Hill’s Community Services Department and Friends of the Signal Hill Library (FOSHL) for hosting an amazing author talk last Monday night. We audience members were treated to an evening of entertainment that included a full-length viewing of the film Antwone Fisher, followed by a visit from Antwone Fisher himself— in the flesh! What a lovely gentleman. He favored us by speaking for more than an hour about the details of his life. We were all just spellbound. After a brief question-and-answer period, we had the chance to chat with him individually as he autographed his books for us. Some of us had our pictures taken with him for posterity. It was a night I will remember forever. Thanks again to all who made it possible.
