Thoughts from the Publisher

As are many local residents, I am a big fan of Delius Restaurant. The owners, Dave and Louise Solzman, have been avid advertisers of mine since I worked for other publications and long before I owned the Signal Tribune. I remember their former restaurant/wine bar on Long Beach Boulevard with fond memories. Steve and I had a prix fixe dinner there for our fifth wedding anniversary, spent a Valentine’s Day evening there BST (before Signal Tribune), and were guests at the Solzmans’ wedding at that restaurant more than 10 years ago.
At the “new” place in Signal Hill, we have also enjoyed the brunch, lunch, dinner and dessert fare and have celebrated many occasions there: Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, birthdays and even a renewal of our vows on our 20th wedding anniversary.
Through the years I have followed Dave and Louise on their Facebook accounts and must say I find it fascinating that two people who work so hard also have the energy for so much hiking and other exercise-oriented leisure activities. Those who are friends or acquaintances of mine surely understand my amazement, as it is well known that I am the antithesis of an outdoorsy person. My idea of spending time outdoors is walking to and from my car on my way to and from work.
With that said, I want to share with you an email I just received from Dave/Delius about a half-marathon team they are putting together. Although I won’t be joining them, other than in spirit, I thought maybe some of our readers might want to participate. Read on:
Normally in this space I would be talking about some delicious menu or excellent wine-tasting coming up soon. This time, however, I am using this space for something a little more fitness-oriented. I am putting together a group of our employees, and we will be running the half marathon at this year’s Long Beach Marathon on Sunday, Oct. 12.
My goal is to promote health and camaraderie amongst our staff members. To incentivize them, I am offering to pay for their race… under one condition— they must beat me! Keeping in mind that I will be 50 years old and most of my crew are in their mid 20s, It should be a fairly attainable goal. Also, the staff member with the best time will receive a $100 bonus.
This is where you come in. I am hoping to include some Delius customers in Team Delius. I’m sorry I can’t offer the same financial incentive, but I’ll give you an official Team Delius running shirt and you may participate in all of our group-training functions. If this is something you were planning to do or maybe had always wanted to try, join us and train for Oct. 12. We will be following a 16-week training plan that [started] Tuesday, June 24. All you have to do is show us your registration confirmation for the race, and we will make you an official member of Team Delius.
(In case of an overwhelming response, Team Delius will be limited to a maximum of 50 people.)
