This hot and muggy weather sure makes me want to spend time outdoors in the evenings. Sunday night I stepped out on the porch to view what I think was one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen. While out there, I found that although it was warm and humid, the gentle wind coming up the hill from the ocean was so cooling. For a split second, I thought that maybe we’d find sleeping on the front porch to be a nice change instead of hubby and me relying on our bedroom’s ceiling fan and small window air conditioner to keep us mildly comfortable.
Not wanting to scare the heck out of our neighbors, I decided to keep my sleeping indoors, although a tent set up in the back yard might work, and the dogs could join us.
Anyway, speaking of warm weather, I am looking forward to taking advantage of some cool breezes at Concerts in the Park, operated by Signal Hill Community Foundation. As always, the free concerts take place every Wednesday evening at 6:30pm starting July 8 at Signal Hill Park, 2175 Cherry Ave. For those of you who don’t know where the park is, you’ll find it at the corner of Cherry Avenue and Hill Street, just south of Signal Hill City Hall.
The bands performing this season sound like a good reason to pack picnic dinners, bring a friend and a chair or two, and settle back for six evenings of pure musical enjoyment. I know that Steve and I plan to be there for most, if not all, concerts. Besides all the musical entertainment, I hear there will also be raffle prizes, food, snacks and beverage booths.
The city’s Community Services Department gave me a concert line-up to share with our readers. Here they are:
July 8: Boxcar 7— Jazz, blues and funk
July 15: DSB— Journey tribute band
July 22: Bella Donna— Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac tribute
July 29: The Smokin’ Cobras— Rockin’ oldies revue
Aug. 5: Abbey Road— Beatles tribute band
Aug. 12: Neon Nation— ’80s music
Keep in mind that if it rains on any concert night, the event will be canceled (and folks will no doubt stay home hooting and hollering and dancing in the rain. Goodness knows we need a little free water for our reservoirs.)
Free events like Signal Hill Concerts in the Park would not be possible without the generous donations from businesses and individuals. This year, those sponsors making the 2015 concerts possible are:
Headliner Sponsors ($3,000-plus) Signal Hill Petroleum; Crimson Pipeline, L.P.; and Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe.
Rockstar Sponsors ($1,000-plus) Mesa Environmental Services, Inc.; Liftech Elevator Services, Inc.; the Signal Tribune; EDCO; Aleshire & Wynder, LLP; and Wells Fargo.

If you have any questions about the concerts, including how to volunteer or donate raffle prizes, please contact the Community Services Department at (562) 989-7330.
I hope to see you there.
