I have always been attracted to men in uniforms. Although military uniforms don’t really catch my eye, I am practically dumbstruck when I see uniformed police officers and firefighters. The sight of them in a group absolutely makes me swoon.
I’m sure that my penchant for uniformed fellows dates back to when I was 3 or 4 years old. At that time, my father worked as a security guard for Douglas Aircraft during the roll-out of the DC-8. He looked so handsome in his uniform, and being such a daddy’s girl, I was pretty much smitten with everything and anything to do with him. No wonder I later married Steve, now a retired Long Beach police officer. He served 31 years on the force. Although he no longer wears a uniform, he too, makes me swoon— except when I’m mad at him, of course.
For those readers who do or do not agree with my sentiments above and find interest in the inner workings of a police station, you have an opportunity to be part of Signal Hill Police Department’s (SHPD) 10-week Citizens Police Academy. Classes will be scheduled on Wednesday evenings starting Aug. 19 and will take place from 7pm to 9pm at the Signal Hill Police Station, 2745 Walnut Ave.
Although priority will be given to Signal Hill residents, Long Beach residents may apply as well. Those to be considered must be 21 years of age or older. Also, to be qualified, applicants cannot have any pending criminal cases or felony convictions.
According to a message I received from SHPD’s Senior Detective Brown, those who attend the 10-week program will learn about patrol operations, criminal law, the court system, narcotics enforcement, investigative techniques, crime prevention, emergency dispatch procedures, and many other areas of law enforcement. Applications are available at the Signal Hill Police Station, 2745 Walnut Ave.
