Tomorrow is a very special day for our family. It is my mother’s 90th birthday. With a recipe including clean living (she claims), a wicked sense of humor, a little good luck and fabulous genes— as well as a brilliant oncologist (Dr. Robert Nagourney), Mom has had all the ingredients for a full, happy and healthy life.
She started as a farm girl, was one of the Rosie the Riveters during the war, married and has been widowed four times, served as Signal Hill city treasurer, was named Signal Hill’s Outstanding Older American in 1994 and has an amazing host of other noteworthy experiences and accolades.
As her only child, I have been fortunate to have so much of her undivided attention. She is my friend, my confidant and my best critic/audience. Many decisions I make are based on my “mommy barometer” or WWMS (What Would Mother Say)— notice I didn’t say what would Mother DO, because that would encompass a whole other personal dynamic between us. I trust her judgment, and many times I preface my statements to her by saying “I was thinking ___________. Do you think I’m crazy or just out of my mind?” If she says “crazy,” it’s a deal breaker and the plan is usually scratched.
My mom can say more with a raised eyebrow and a devilish smile than a thousand words could ever convey. Looking at me over the top of her trifocals still makes me sit up and take notice, as that is her signal to me of her disapproval. Unfortunately for both of us, she still has to peek over her spectacles at me from time to time. I remain true to my personality and am still a bit naughty. I have to admit that sometimes I misbehave just to make her smile or scowl. I think she knows it, too.
We’ve made some amazing road trips alone together, including visits to Ohio, Kansas City, Sacramento, Watsonville (that was a fun one), Tucson, and other destinations near and far. I love being in the car with her. We never run out of things (and people) to talk about.
Steve thinks she’s a pretty great mother-in-law too. He should¬— she usually takes his side! That’s okay with me. I’m so glad they love each other. We all three have fond memories of both sets of parents joining us nearly 20 years ago on our honeymoon cruise to Mexico. What a hoot. It wouldn’t have been nearly as fun without them.
Besides the happy times, Mom and I have shared sad times too. Through it all, we have survived with an amazing bond that will NEVER be broken. I am so lucky to have her as my mom.

Happy 90th birthday, Marjorie Grommé.
With love from your girl— Neena Rose.
