According to the website History.com, the commemoration process began in 1980 when President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week. The next year, Congress continued the action by passing its own resolution mirroring that of President Carter’s. Six years later, in 1987, the National Women’s History Project effectively lobbied Congress to expand the time-frame of the designation to include the full month of March.
In 2016, I attended Assemblymember Patrick O’Donnell’s (D-Long Beach) annual Women of Distinction event. One important part of the ceremonies included the reading of an original poem by its author, a young woman by the name of Jaci Cortez. I was very moved by her talent. To honor the occasion of Women’s History Month, I share her words with you:
“Enduring Woman”
To those who are a Merit of society
Those who are patient
Those who are powerful communicators
Those who are a strong community and home builders
Those who hold high business ethics
Those who are passionate for equality
Society taught me that those are weak and fragile
Who are those?
Those are you, someone you love or know,
and me I learned from my role model that we are strong
We were made to tolerate pain, but we transform it to strength
When in stress we never give up but come up with fast solutions
The distinction the world needs isn’t something money can buy
Who are those?
They are Women!
The world needs to realize being or having a woman in our life is a privilege
Sadly, this is something the world tends to forget
That we are forever enduring women.
