Thoughts from the Publisher | March 24

I especially enjoy vintage pictures of local people, events and cityscapes of Long Beach and Signal Hill.
Back in the early years of the Signal Tribune, we published a feature titled “Reminiscing.” Every week, we would print a photo from my collection that depicted local happenings, buildings and people, usually circa 1940s—1960s. Our intent was to not only showcase the photos, but to also see if any of our readers could tell us more about these pictures. When we did learn details about one of the pics, we printed the information under the heading of “Reminiscing Revealed” and shared another image of the same photo along with the name of the reader who supplied the facts about that particular picture.

Over the years, I have really missed that part of the paper and am happy to tell you that we will be resurrecting that feature in my column from time to time.
What prompted this turn of events? Well, several days ago I received a thick envelope in the mail that contained several old pictures. Not only were the pictures a lovely surprise, so was the origin of the surprise package.
The packet came from our dear friend Steve Hastings. As some of you may remember, Steve and his dad owned Star Jewelers for more than 40 years. Back in the summer of 2007, Steve closed the Bixby Knolls store and moved to Florida.
As Steve mentioned in the note that accompanied the photos, he is thoroughly enjoying his well deserved retirement and bids greetings to his old friends and customers.
Posted is a copy of one of the pictures he gave me. As luck would have it, a full description of the men depicted was written on the back side of the photo (above), I assume by the photographer. As the first two lines of the printed words describe, the picture was taken in 1948 at the opening of the Bixby Knolls Branch of the Security First National Bank.
I thank Steve for not only sending the photographs, but also for inspiring us to revive our feature “Reminiscing.”
