Thoughts From The Publisher : Mother’s Day Essay Contest

neena strichartMother’s Day has always been a big deal for our family. When I was a little girl Daddy and I would sneak out to buy Mom a present–telling her we had to “run an errand.” I’m sure she knew what we were up to–and probably considered her quiet time at home during our shopping trip as a bit of a gift in itself.
We were thoughtful in our gift-giving but not very creative. Whether the present was for birthday, Christmas, Mother’s Day or other special occasion, we remained consistent in our shopping venues–either Rexall Drug Store or Broadway Department Store. At Rexall (corner of Cherry Avenue and Anaheim Street) I would peruse the costume jewelry case and carefully choose an ensemble of earrings, necklace and bracelet. Faux tortoise shell was all the rage at the time and I remember buying Mom several sets. I still wear the earrings. At the Broadway, Dad and I would work together to pick out the latest addition to Mom’s charm bracelet. We finally stopped buying charms when the bracelet got so heavy she could hardly raise her hand. Now a days Mom says no more jewelry, claims she’d much prefer a nice meal out. She says she has enough “things.” We are happy to accommodate.
I have a suggestion for those wondering what to do for their moms this Mother’s Day. Enter the Skin Spa Institute’s second annual Mother’s Day of Beauty Essay Contest. All you need to do is write a short essay in your own words that explains why your mom deserves a pampering day of beauty at The SkinSpa and drop off, mail, fax or e-mail your essay to: The SkinSpa Institute Essay Contest, 2201 East Willow Street, Suite H, Signal Hill, CA 90755, e-mail: info@theskinspausa.com, fax: (562) 426-1385. The winner was thrilled. I had a chance to meet her when I dropped by during her special day to take a picture for the paper.
The lucky winner’s mom will receive a relaxing spa facial, 60-minute massage, spa manicure and pedicure, shampoo and blow-dry, mineral makeup lesson as well as a champagne lunch–all courtesy of SkinSpa Institute. Also included will be two tickets for the Long Beach Playhouse and a $25 gift certificate for Buono’s Authentic Pizzeria–thanks to both of those establishments for their generous donations. Mom’s day will be completed with a fabulous take home gift basket filled with SPA products–total package is worth of $950. Deadline is Monday, May 7–winner announced Saturday, May 12.
