Taking place at 10am, and starting at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Harding Street near Houghton Park, the 20th annual parade will feature grand marshals, floats, marching bands, military vehicles and units, veteran groups, service organizations, ROTC corps, scouting troops, equestrians and other participants sure to bring out the patriotism in all of us.
The Signal Tribune will also be taking part with Steve driving our logo-adorned SUV, me in the passenger seat and our neighbor boy Ethan riding in the back seat. I believe Steve and I have participated in the parade since the inaugural event.
If you have never attended the Long Beach Veterans Day Parade, please plan to do so this year. It is definitely an event worth attending.
For the fourth year, our staff has had the honor of creating and publishing the commemorative program to be presented to parade participants and viewers. With articles about the history of each branch of the military, local veteran-related stories, tributes to the grand marshals and details regarding the beautiful veterans mural located at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Harding Street, we are sure that recipients of the program will hang on to it for years to come. We thank the sponsors of the parade and the advertisers for making the publication possible. Those who cannot attend: take a look at our website— signaltribune.com— to see a copy of the parade program. Also on our website will be a videoed version of the parade created by Bill Pearl at LBReport.com. He is a gifted videographer, and we are proud to be a sponsor of this visual and audio production. The finished product will be available on his site as well.
On our end, I want to thank our staff members who worked so conscientiously to help me create such a special booklet; they are: Amy Patton, design/production manager; writers Denny Cristales, Sebastian Echeverry and Rachael Rifkin; Lindsey Maeda, cover designer; and Laurie Hanson, proofreader. A big thank-you also goes out to Val Lerch, chair of the 20th Annual Long Beach Veterans Day Parade. His diligence, support and availability helped make our job much more stress-free than it could have been.
On another note, but still pertaining to those in uniform, Signal Hill Police Department is participating in a Tip-A-Cop fundraiser on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at Applebee’s Grill & Bar, located at 899 E. Spring St. in Signal Hill. The event will take place from 5pm to 9pm. All proceeds will directly benefit the local Special Olympics athletes. Keep in mind that all donations are tax deductible. The occasion will give attendees great satisfaction by providing the opportunity to donate to a worthy cause, dine with current and new friends, and see Signal Hill’s finest waiting tables. What a lovely combination. See you there.
