Seventieth District State Assemblymember Patrick O’Donnell and 8th District Long Beach Councilmember Al Austin, in partnership with the State Bar of California, an administrative arm of the California Supreme Court, will host “Schemes, Scams & Rip-Offs,” a fraud-prevention town hall for seniors, at the Expo Arts Center, 4321 Atlantic Ave., on Saturday, Aug. 1 at 9am.
Legal and law-enforcement advisers will present information on how to stop and fight identity theft, how to protect money and prevent common scams and rip-offs that target seniors.
U.S. Rep. Alan Lowenthal will be a special guest at the event.
Presentations will include:
• Identity Theft: How The Thieves Target You (by the California Statewide Law Enforcement Association)
• Protect Your Money! Banks, Wire Transfers, Investments & Loans (by the Department of Business Oversight)
• Legal Scams (by the State Bar of California)
• Scams & Rip-Offs Targeting Seniors in Local Neighborhoods (by the Long Beach Police Department)
• When You Need Help (by the Los Angeles County Department of Consumer & Business Affairs)
“Fraud and identity theft are serious problems affecting many residents, and seniors are often targeted,” O’Donnell said. “We have a great panel of experts to provide seniors with helpful tips and tools to avoid becoming a victim.”
Austin echoes O’Donnell’s sentiments, hoping the presentation will provide vital information on protection.
“I am pleased to partner with state and local agencies to bring this important information to the community,” Austin said. “The best way to protect yourself is to be informed.”
The event is co-sponsored by the 8th District Senior Advisory Council, the California Statewide Law Enforcement Association, the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, the California Department of Business Oversight, the Bureau of Real Estate and the Los Angeles County Department of Consumer & Business Affairs.
Coffee and pastries will be served.
