Unlicensed 17-year-old driver fatally strikes man lying in road

A 17-year-old resident of Long Beach fatally struck an adult man who was lying in the road near the intersection of Artesia Boulevard and Orizaba Avenue on Thursday, Feb. 10., according to the Long Beach Police Department. 

At approximately 8:32 p.m. on Feb. 10, police officers arrived at the area of Artesia Boulevard and Orizaba Avenue in response to a reported vehicle collision.

When officers arrived they found an adult male pedestrian trapped underneath a vehicle, LBPD said.

The Long Beach Fire Department arrived on scene and was able to remove the pedestrian’s body from underneath the vehicle. He was declared deceased at the scene by Fire Department personnel.

A Los Angeles County Coroner Investigator arrived at the scene and will assist detectives in identifying the pedestrian.

According to LBPD, the 17-year-old driver did not have a driver’s license and was identified by his California Identification Card.

The teen remained at the site and cooperated with the investigation. He was released to his parent at the scene.

Police said that distracted driving, speeding and impaired driving do not appear to have been a factor in this collision.
