Long Beach’s Government Operations and Efficiency Committee is conducting an online survey to assess the obstacles stopping people from attending city council meetings.

The goal of the survey is to make city council meetings more welcoming and accessible for residents in an effort to increase civic participation. According to the survey, answers will guide discussion at an upcoming committee meeting.

While city council meetings are just one of many ways to participate in local government, residents can make their voices heard on a variety of issues that affect all communities. In the past few months, Long Beach City Council has made decisions on the City’s budget, wages for workers, homelessness enforcement, Microenterprise Home Kitchens and more.

At each of these meetings, organizations and residents shared their perspectives and gave councilmembers a more holistic view on issues.

Questions on the survey include:

  • How have you participated in city council meetings in the past 12 months, and how often?
  • What barriers keep you from attending meetings in person?
  • How do you usually learn about upcoming council meetings?
  • What changes would most increase your likelihood of attending a city council meeting?
  • Any additional suggestions for making city council meetings more accessible and engaging?

There is currently no cut-off date for the survey. Click here to submit your online form.
