The Associated Radio Amateurs of Long Beach (ARALB) Scholarship Committee has selected David Strachan-Olson as the 2009 recipient of its $250 Hal Nahmen Scholarship. Strachan-Olson is a student at Wilson High School where he is preparing for a career in electrical engineering. He has been accepted as an intern at both Boeing and JPL this summer.
As an active member of the Wilson Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Team (AREC), he works to support amateur radio in the community. The AREC team conducts regular drills to set up reliable radio communications should normal phone channels fail in an emergency. He demonstrated emergency communications preparedness at the Long Beach Unified School District Science Fair and spoke to the Shoreline Yacht Club’s Amateur Radio Association.
Next year, Strachan-Olson will serve as captain of the AREC team at Wilson and plans to use his scholarship to purchase books and other equipment for the team. He also hopes to contribute toward obtaining a high-frequency vertical radio antenna for six and 10 meters.
He will receive his check and certificate at the next ARALB meeting on Friday, July 3 at 7pm at the Signal Hill Community Center, 1780 Hill St. The public is invited to this meeting, as well as all ARALB meetings.
