Official 2017 Signal Hill City Council election results on March 16 revealed that incumbents Lori Woods and Edward Wilson and City Clerk Robert Copeland— with a one-vote lead over candidate Keir Jones— would be elected to the city council.
During the Signal Hill City Council meeting on March 21, Woods, Wilson and Copeland were sworn in as councilmembers. Wilson was also appointed mayor later that evening.
The Signal Tribune reported last week that City staff had conducted a hand-verbal count of the votes that afternoon of one precinct— Discovery Well Park— as a test to ensure and verify the accuracy of the machine’s ballot count, the results of which revealed a discrepancy. That afternoon, staff were re-counting the precinct numbers to determine the final results.
At press time on March 16, Copeland and Jones were both still vying for the third and final spot on the council.
Measure F, a citizen’s initiative that would have instituted a 10-percent tax on monetary transactions for medical-marijuana facilities in Signal Hill, did not pass, with 605 “no” votes and 534 “yes” votes.
