A California Highway patrol officer on a motorcycle was severely injured when he fatally struck a 24-year-old man outside a crosswalk Sunday morning in Long Beach.
The crash occurred about 4:40am on Del Amo Boulevard, west of Cherry Avenue, according to the CHP.
A spokesman for the department said the officer was believed to be on his way to work.
The pedestrian, identified as Cezanne Mount of Long Beach, was crossing Del Amo Blvd. outside a crosswalk when he was struck by CHP Officer Alfredo Gutierrez’s motorcycle. Mount was knocked down and landed in the No. 1 lane.
Mount was pronounced dead at the scene.
Gutierrez was ejected from his motorcycle and landed in the No. 3 lane, several yards away from her. He suffered major head trauma and was transported to Long Beach Memorial Hospital for treatment.
