Long Beach will begin offering COVID-19 boosters for Moderna and Johnson & Johnson starting tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 23. Pfizer boosters have been available to eligible people since Sept. 24.
Both Pfizer and Moderna boosters are available six months after an eligible person’s first dose.
Those eligible include persons ages 65 and older who are residents of long term care facilities; those ages 18 to 64 with underlying medical conditions; and those ages 18 and older with high institutional or occupational risk—including healthcare workers, first responders, teachers, daycare staff, grocery workers and workers at homeless shelters or prisons.
The Johnson & Johnson booster will be available to everyone 18 and older who has had their single dose at least two months prior.
“Our city has been doing a great job getting vaccinated, now with nearly 81% of our adults having received the COVID-19 vaccine,” Mayor Robert Garcia said in a statement. “Now, with these additional boosters available we will be able to further protect our frontline workers and other high-risk populations.”
People can mix and match their booster shot, meaning that they can get a booster of any brand regardless of which initial vaccine they received.
Anyone who qualifies can receive the Moderna vaccine as a half dose, a full dose of Pfizer or a full dose of Johnson & Johnson. The timing of the booster will depend on a person’s initial vaccine type—two months after for J&J or six months after for Pfizer or Moderna.
