Youth performance inspired by Dr. King speech

The Office of Councilman Dee Andrews, in partnership with the Long Beach Weed and Seed Program, Parks, Recreation and Marine and Boys & Girls Club of Long Beach, will host a “Peace, Unity & Hope Youth Performance” on Thursday, Jan. 15 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, 1950 Lemon Avenue.
The performance by youth for youth is a way to connect young people of all ages and races around peace and unity. The concept for the event is centered on King’s famous speech, stating “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”
The line-up is intermixed with youth performances from groups such as Iceman and the Homeland Crew, Mariachi Juvenil Alegre, United Cambodian Center— Dark Elite, the Boys and Girls Club Teen Center and speakers ranging from community elders, young visionaries and a young man who will attend the Inauguration of President-Elect Obama on January 20.
Refreshments will be served for all in attendance. For more information on the event, contact Tracy Colunga, Child Care/Weed and Seed Program coordinator with the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services, at (562) 570-4402, or by email at tracy.colunga@longbeach.gov.
