Long Beach 8th District Councilwoman Rae Gabelich, Goodwill Serving the People of Southern Los Angeles County, Su Casa and the California Department of Toxic Substances Control, invite residents to the 2nd Annual 8th District E-waste Drive in Bixby Knolls on Saturday, March 15 from 9 a.m. to noon.
Residents may bring their old computer monitors, televisions, computers, cell phones, CD and DVD players for a tax-deductible donation. The collection drive will take place at Scherer Park in the parking lot by the North Division Police Substation at the southwest corner of Atlantic Avenue and Del Amo Boulevard.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for residents to clean out their closets and garages and properly dispose of their old electronic items and receive a tax deduction and support Su Casa and Goodwill,” said Gabelich.
“Most electronic items contain toxic substances like mercury and lead and it is illegal to throw those items away in the trash,” said Janet McCarthy-Wilson, president and CEO of Goodwill. “Your old monitor or television will be recycled by Goodwill, with proceeds going directly to our education, skills training and employment placement programs.”
The donated cell phones will go to Su Casa, which provides domestic violence shelters and crisis intervention. “The cellular phones are used as emergency life lines for Su Casa clients, who are families that have fled abusive homes and are striving to live healthy, violence-free lives,” said Christina Satki, Community Liaison for Su Casa.
This is a community event, so it will not be possible to accept commercial, industrial, or large-scale E-waste or household hazardous waste, fluorescent tubes or batteries at the E-waste collection drive.
