Did you know that two unaltered cats can produce 420,000 descendents in just seven years? Or, that two unaltered dogs can produce up to 67,000 descendents in just six years? This is called the “multiplier” effect and it’s the leading cause of chronic pet overpopulation.
To raise funds for their programs, FOLBA is having a yard sale on Saturday, August 9 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 5504 Monlaco Road in Long Beach. Donations (except clothing) will be accepted.
In 1998, Friends of Long Beach Animals (FOLBA) recognized the need for a low-cost spay/neuter and public awareness program and introduced Long Beach’s only Spay Neuter Incentive Program (SNIP). The program encourages participation by all city residents and offers low-cost and/or free vouchers to local residents requiring financial assistance. The program’s accomplishments to date have resulted in a total of 13,057 animals spayed/neutered at a program cost of $527,746.
FOLBA has partnered with Long Beach Animal Control to distribute SNIP vouchers to city residents. Each animal control officer carries a supply of vouchers in the vehicle for easy distribution in situations when a city resident appears to be in need.
In 2004, Long Beach Animal Control was recognized as the leading distributor of SNIP vouchers in the cities of Long Beach and Signal Hill and received a recognition award for its tireless efforts.
FOLBA also supports teaching children kindness to and respect for animals. FOLBA has provided several copies of humane books to all libraries in the Long Beach Unified School District, all the public libraries in Long Beach and Signal Hill, as well as to Raising-a-Reader and to Mary Bethune Transitional Center (assisting homeless children who need reading improvement so they can attend regular LBUSD classes).
