Cubberley sixth-grader wins So Cal Jeopardy tournament

Dominating students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade, Jacob Bower, a Cubberley K-8 School sixth-grader, won the 2014-15 Southern California Jeopardy tournament, which took place June 13 at Hamilton Middle School in Long Beach. Bower was the first sixth-grader to win the honor, beating out school champions from nine other Southern California schools, according to Jim Birge, who organizes the events. The runner-up was also a sixth-grader— Caleb Marsh of Hughes Middle School. Gavin Rissling, a seventh-grader from St. Edward Parish School in Dana Point, placed third in the tournament.
The Final Jeopardy category was “Recent News.” The final clue was: “On March 19, the environmentally sensitive coastline of this Southern California city fell victim to a 100,000-gallon oil spill.”

Only Bower replied with, “What is Santa Barbara?” thus earning him the title.
