Academic UpRise to host Educational Symposium, Presidents Forum

Beginning on November 20, Academic UpRise will host its Seventh Annual Educational Symposium and Presidents Forum, as they continue their commitment to impacting the lives of children by providing academic coaching, California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) test preparation, financial literacy and mentoring services for local area youth.
In collaboration with the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD), as well as with California State University at Long Beach (CSULB) and Los Angeles (CSULA), the three day event entitled “Leadership for the 21st Century, Guiding African-Americans and Latinos in Education and Career Development,” will begin with the Academic UpRise Leaders of Distinction Awards Dinner on Thursday evening, November 20 at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach at 6 p.m.

“This award’s dinner and ceremony was created to honor exceptional individuals and corporations for going the extra mile,” said Elder Eddie Pierson, III, Founder/CEO of Academic UpRise. “Each of our honorees has contributed significantly to the overall success and growth of our organization.”
Award recipients for this year will include: Congresswoman Laura Richardson— Public Servant Vanguard Award; Charter Communications— Corporate Community Spirit Award; Margaux Kohut, President of the California Conference for Equality and Justice— Advocate Leader Award; and Juan Tapia, Millikan High School graduate— Next Generation Leader Award.
The event will continue on Friday, November 21 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., as Academic UpRise plays host to 300 juniors and seniors from the LBUSD, who will travel to CSULB to engage in workshops and activities designed to enlighten and motivate them to not only achieve at their current school, but to begin thinking about the next phase of their academic careers.
The event will conclude on Saturday, November 22 with sessions starting at 8:30 a.m. and running through 3 p.m. This will include an Educational Symposium and Presidents Forum in conjunction with a College Expo, providing students the opportunity to take part in a variety of worthwhile workshops. Boasting a diverse lineup of dynamic presenters and entertainers, this year’s event will feature MEE Productions, as they present a program regarding the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), along with many other financial aid and scholarship opportunities for minorities.
