This past month, local heroes were honored by KNX News Radio at a special luncheon ceremony at the Hollywood & Highland complex in Hollywood.
Several Long Beach residents were recognized, including Long Beach Councilman Dee Andrews.
KNX 1070 anchors Diane Thompson and Frank Mottek hosted the 2007 KNX Heroes ceremony, honoring 20 remarkable individuals whose stories were originally told on the air by the station.
Each hero’s heartwarming story was saluted at the luncheon.
Long Beach residents who were honored included: city councilman and former Dallas Cowboy Dee Andrews, who chased a flasher into the arms of police; teenager Jeremy Oats, who, along with some friends, rushed into a burning apartment to save a mother and her three children; and Joe Vanderhoof, who risked his own life to save more than 40 of his neighbors from a high-rise apartment fire on Ocean Boulevard.
“KNX 1070 News Radio is proud to honor people who have made extraordinary contributions to our community or performed heroic actions in a time of need,” said Thompson.
“I don’t think of myself as a hero. I just did what anyone else would have done. We just can’t watch as others are in need of assistance. I am honored to be in the presence of the other KNX—recognized heroes,” said Andrews.
KNX has been recognizing individuals for their extraordinary contributions to the community or heroic actions since 1971.
