Long Beach celebrated Memorial Day with a new event at the Navy Memorial at Shoreline Aquatic Park to honor the nation’s fallen service members with a sunset ceremony on May 28.

The event titled “Honoring Our Heroes – A Sunset Ceremony” was organized by the newly formed Office of Veterans Support and included a historic fighter plane flyover, music from the Navy Band Southwest Harborside Brass Quintet, plus color guard and drill presentations.

During the event, attendees could also receive information from local veteran groups and receive support from city resources dedicated to helping the city’s veteran community.

Despite the lack of sun on the gloomy day, the ceremony finished in typical military fashion with a lowering of the colors and the playing of “Taps” on a trumpet.
