Long Beach mayor says police will not assist in alleged ICE raids this weekend

Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia took to Twitter Friday to announce a statement in Spanish clarifying that local police will not cooperate in the alleged Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency raids slated to take place this weekend.

The LBPD told the Signal Tribune via email Friday evening that media reports indicated the raids were taking place.

According to Jennifer De Prez, LBPD public information officer, local police does not make or intentionally participate in arrests based on civil immigration warrants. She cited the Federal Immigration Enforcement Special Order that was made effective on May 23, 2018 as the reason for the police’s inactivity in the supposed raids.

“The threats and actions by the administration of this president against the Latino, undocumented and immigrant communities are unjust and dangerous,” Garcia said in his post. “I have communicated with our chief of police that we will not cooperate with ICE in civil-immigration arrests […] ”

The mayor also stated that ICE agents will not be given access to LBPD’s internal data.

“Long Beach supports our immigrants and they fortify our city,” his message concluded.

  1. I love Mayor Garcia. Thank you, Mayor for standing up for justice and humanity! Trump’s actions are insidious and destructive. We need to be creating positive paths towards citizenship for our valuable immigrant community. God bless the salt of the earth.

  2. I support ICE.
    They are enforcing the law.
Our Mayor is aiding and abetting by promoting the city’s sanctuary city policy.
Mayor Garcia truly does not have the well being of the Hispanic community at heart.
Mayor Garcia is politically driven to move up in the Democratic Party hierarchy by pandering to the liberal base at the expense of the safety of our community as a whole.
The people, and I mean all of the people of all ethnic stripes and heritages.
There is no such thing as a free lunch!
The freedoms and rights afforded us by the Constitution comes at a cost.
The Constitution enables each and every one of its citizens the opportunities to pursue being all that they can be and to be able to care for their families.
That being said, citizens have a responsibility to hold elected representatives accountable for legislation and enforcing the laws of the land.
As a citizen you have a responsibility to be current and up to date on how you are being governed.
As a citizen you are responsible for getting all of the facts in detail not by sound bites by the powers to be ,to be sure you know what you are voting on.
You have a responsibility as a citizen to vote. 10 percent participation rates at election time is a disgrace.
Citizenship is hard work and if we don’t participate then we deserve the representation that we get.

  3. I lived in California most of my life. I owned a home in Lakewood Village (close to Long Beach City College). The politicians just made it way too difficult for my family to retire in Long Beach and California. I moved to a State that has no State Income Tax and crime is low and just loving it.

I’m just part of the middle-class leaving California. Get use to it, it is going to happen more and more. If you think that illegals can fill the gap, you are mistaken.

  5. Great, I’m glad this policy has finally changed. In the last 2 years on 3 occasions I have observed LBPD squad cars right there behind the ICE vans during active raids on people’s homes!!

  6. Kinda funny! One would think the Latino’s are the only people that entered the US illegally? Not so, Many Asian races, many European races, Northern European races, South American races, and the list go on and on. No one wants to be deported. Let’s face it, it is a lot of work trying to enter a foreign nation and involves a lot of risk and there are US federal immigration laws. Also many people do not want you here. Even the past generations that came here via Ellis Island in New York, which was a real hell hole and they got no food stamps, no assistance, no place to sleep. You where on your own. My Grandparents came to America through Ellis Island. So get in the long line and just maybe you will get to stay. Good luck. The LB mayor sounds to be very anti American. Not good.
