The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will continue pavement replacement on the Long Beach Freeway (I-710) at various locations along a nine-mile stretch from the San Diego Freeway (I-405) to Firestone Boulevard in the cities of Long Beach, Compton, Paramount, Lynwood and South Gate.
The work will include seven extended weekend closures to replace deteriorated pavement. Both north-and southbound I-710 will be closed completely from the Artesia Freeway (SR-91) to the Glenn Anderson Freeway (I-105) as follows:
Friday, October 24, 10:00 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Sunday, October 26, 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Friday, October 31, 10:00 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Sunday, November 2, 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
When the freeway reopens, all traffic will be diverted to southbound I-710 to accommodate the work in the northbound direction. Two lanes will be available for northbound traffic and three lanes will be available for southbound traffic from Saturday at 7 a.m. to Sunday at 11 p.m. on the above dates. Additional extended weekend closures are expected in November and December. Those dates will be announced at a later time.
Pavement rehabilitation will provide a smoother driving surface, leading to a reduction in future maintenance. Construction of maintenance pullouts at selected areas will provide a safe location for maintenance vehicles to stop to work and safely return to mainline traffic flow.
This is the second of three projects to replace pavement in the corridor. The first project from Pacific Coast Highway to I-405 was completed in 2003. The construction of the current project is expected to complete in 2011.
Additionally, heavy traffic is expected during these extended weekend closures. Motorists are reminded that traffic fines are doubled in freeway work zones.
