On the weekend of Jan. 26, Rancho Los Cerritos will be hosting two events. On Saturday, Jan. 26, the Rancho is having its Living History Tours program in which visitors will be able to tour the 163-year-old house with a docent reenacting a character from the 19th century. Following that event will be their bi-annual Volunteer Coffee on Sunday.
During the Living History Tours, Margaret Bixby and her sister Susan will talk about family and daily life on a sheep ranch in the 19th century, and Fanny Bixby Spencer and Llewellyn Bixby Sr. will share developments in Long Beach and discuss how the crumbling adobe was transformed into a modern home in 1930.
Explore ranch work through the eyes of Charlie Emerson, blacksmith, or visit with Bixby cousins from San Luis Obispo. These free, guided tours by our talented Friends of Rancho Los Cerritos volunteers will be offered every half-hour throughout the afternoon, with the last tour leaving at 4 p.m.
At Sunday’s bi-annual “Volunteer Coffee,” guests can find out how to become a part of Long Beach’s heritage by becoming a docent, helping with the historic gardens, preserving historical collections, conducting research, or assisting with the museum gift shop. The Volunteer Coffee is on Sunday, Jan. 27 from 10 a.m. to noon.
