On Fourth of July, the Signal Hill Police Department will have additional officers on patrol looking for drivers suspected of being under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
“If you plan on drinking this weekend, plan on a safe and sober ride home,” SHPD Sergeant Don Moreau said in a statement. “Think of your loved ones, friends, and family before thinking about driving after you’ve had a few drinks.”
From 2016 to 2020, 1,390 drivers were killed in motor vehicle crashes over the Fourth of July holiday period—41% of the drivers killed were drunk, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
SHPD encourages residents to do research on prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications and marijuana to determine how certain drugs might affect their ability to drive.
Those heading out to watch fireworks or celebrating Independence Day with friends are encouraged to monitor their level of drinking and designate sober drivers.
Funding for the extra patrols comes from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
