Vehicle access will be restricted in the Signal Hill Hilltop area and surrounding areas on Monday, July 4 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The Hilltop area, home to Hilltop Park, is a popular viewing area for scenic views of Long Beach and Signal Hill, as well as a prime location for viewing fireworks during the Fourth of July and New Year holidays.

However, only Hilltop residents and their pre-approved guests will be allowed to drive into the area on Independence Day.

“The park is open to anyone, it’s a public park. The only thing we restrict is vehicle access to the hilltop to prevent any accidents since there’s a lot of pedestrians up there,” Signal Hill Police Sergeant Raul Ramirez said.

The City of Signal Hill will set up two checkpoints—the first at 21st Street and Junipero Avenue and the second at Temple Avenue and 20th Street—to screen those entering the area and check their proof of residency.

Hilltop residents who intend to bring guests should contact Sergeant Ramirez at rramirez@signalhillpd.org with their name, address and the number of guests.

Residents should expect to see “No Parking” signs at barricades prior to the July 4 holiday. Illegal street parking will be enforced, according to the City of Signal Hill’s website

No parking will be allowed at Gardena Avenue and Crescent Heights Street, as well as Gardenia Avenue and Burnett Street.

All of Skyline Drive, which circles the park area, will be closed to traffic at Cherry Avenue.

Barricades will be in place at Skyline Drive and Ocean View Drive, and Temple Avenue and Hill Street. Eastbound traffic on Hill Street will be prohibited.

Barricades will also be in place at Skyline Drive and Dawson Avenue, but access will be permitted for Hilltop residents who need handicap access, according to the City’s website.

“Please consider viewing area fireworks displays at the event itself, as Hilltop space is extremely limited,” the City’s website states

Update, June 30: This story was updated to clarify that only vehicle access will be restricted in the Hilltop area. A quote was added from Sergeant Raul Ramirez.
