The Greater Long Beach Chapter of the American Red Cross Youth Services Program and youth organization L.A. County Teens are sponsoring a “Nothin’ But Net” benefit basketball tournament to support the American Red Cross Malaria Prevention Program. All proceeds from the event will go to continue the work of the Malaria Prevention Program in Africa and other at-risk regions of the world.
The American Red Cross Malaria Prevention Program works with partners to distribute bed nets and utilizes volunteers from the national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies to educate families to ensure nets are used properly.
Insecticide-treated bed nets are said to be one of the most effective means of preventing malaria by providing a protective barrier around families, especially at night when malaria-carrying mosquitoes strike.
Each $10 donation goes to support the purchase and delivery of an insecticide-treated bed net, including distribution, education, monitoring and evaluation.
The 4-on-4 basketball tournament will take place on Saturday, April 12 at Cerritos Regional Park, located at 19700 Bloomfield Avenue in Cerritos from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. The registration fee is $40 per team and is open to teens ages 18 and under. Teams must register before the tournament.
